Conference Addresses Border Control

The chapter organized a one-day conference on “Electronic Monitoring Services for Identification and Control of Borders.” Grigorious Tasoulas, secretary general of public order of the Ministry of Citizen Protection, opened the event, which was held at the Armed Forces Officers Club. The conference covered three topics, which were detailed in analytical briefings presented by subject matter experts: technological developments and the requirement for convening military and civilian security electronic monitoring systems; electronic surveillance systems; and electronic identification and the related legal issues. More than 150 attendees from the three armed forces branches, the police, the coast guard, academia and industry participated in the conference and intervened with comments and remarks.

Before the closure of the conference, Lt. Gen. Leonidas Mazarakis, HAF (Ret.), chapter president, summarized the results of the conference and emphasized the need for convening military systems, civil defense and security to make full use of available resources while reducing costs. Exploiting the potential offered by the initiatives of nongovernmental organizations, particularly those operating in the area of technology such as AFCEA, can assist in the effective management and resolution of the challenges that exist in security and defense. The need for increased information exchange and involvement of academic bodies and domestic defense industry is critical in the research and development of security and defense systems and services. The students from the AFCEA Student Club of the American College of Greece provided great assistance in the organization of the conference.
