CAMP PENDLETON CHAPTER CHAPTER - Jan 19, 2011

Marine Corps Messaging Systems

Pete Copeland, assistant chief of staff, Communication Information Systems Department (CISD), Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, provided the January luncheon attendees with a presentation on the organizational make up and mission responsibilities of the CISD. Disseminating roughly 49,000 defense messages per month, the Camp Pendleton Area Control Center (one of seven divisions within the CISD) is responsible for all active duty Marine units west of the Mississippi River. Additionally, the CISD provides network connectivity for Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and all tenant units.

Copeland provided an operational snapshot of the many ongoing military construction projects aboard the base and the associated telecommunications requirements. Luncheon attendees included two of the 2011 AFCEA Camp Pendleton Chapter Science Teaching Tools Award winners: Lorry Peacock of Carlsbad High School and Stephen Klienrath of Rancho Buena Vista High School. The chapter also had a great turnout for the 7th Annual AFCEA Buck Bragunier Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament. More than 130 golfers participated and the chapter raised $15,000. ITT sponsored the tournament. Participants gathered afterwards for awards and a buffet dinner sponsored by CDW-G.
