SEOUL CHAPTER CHAPTER - May 18, 2011 |
Luncheon Covers Downside of Social Media |
In May, the chapter hosted a lunch during the Signal Corps Regimental Association's 2011 Korea LandWarNet Training Conference at the Capital Hotel in Seoul. Dave Marcus, director of security research of McAfee Labs, addressed the audience with one of the most dynamic and informative presentations of the year. His presentation to an enthusiastic crowd of members and conference attendees perfectly complemented the conference theme of Transition in North East Asia: Implementing the Enterprise to Enhance Warfighting and Cyber Operations. Marcus focused his lively, interactive discussion on “The Downside of Social Media,” and he demonstrated to the crowd how he could collect very personal information on just about anyone in less than 20 minutes; 8 minutes on average. He emphasized that social media is a conversation that is permanent, kept in national archives and social media host databases. Furthermore, social media sites share user data with other sites and it is easy for anyone to collect your likes and dislikes and other key information to develop your profile and use this information to socially engineer you. He encouraged individuals to take action and secure their personal settings on social media sites and to completely know their individual settings on their applications, mobile devices, operating systems, etc. Privacy is no longer private, but individuals have it in their power to control what they share over any network. |
