SOUTH CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA CHAPTER CHAPTER - Nov 29, 2011 |
General Discusses Cyber Challenges |
The chapter recently hosted Maj. Gen. Steven Smith, USA, director for the U.S. Army Chief Information Office/G-6 Cyber Directorate, as the speaker for its November luncheon. Gen. Smith is responsible for the development, implementation and execution of the Army's cyberspace strategy and cyber-related information technology systems and subsystems. During his presentation, the general discussed the issues the Army faces as a result of stove-piped information technology enclaves that lead to multiple help desks that cannot communicate, resulting in implementation of nonstandard network tools and duplication of efforts. Gen. Smith explained that industry can help the Army solve these problems through innovation and providing open standards as the Army moves to a single, standards-based network that will save money and increase capability. Following the presentation, he answered several questions from the audience regarding the future of the Army's cyber strategy. |
