ARGENTINA CHAPTER CHAPTER - May 09, 2012

Conference Highlights Scientific Challenge

In May, the chapter sponsored a conferenced titled “Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Higgs Boson” at the Argentine Army's Escuela Superior Técnica in Buenos Aires. Fernando Monticelli, who has a Ph.D. in physics, served as the lecturer for approximately 30 attendees. Monticelli belongs to a group in Argentina involved in exploring the enormous challenge presented by these topics together with scientists from 35 countries. He explained the challenge to attendees and discussed the LHC and the ATLAS detector along with the physics being studied with these instruments. He gave a conceptual overview of how the ATLAS experiment searches for the Higgs boson; a brief summary of the most important results of data collection in 2011; and the expectations for the current year.
