Focusing on Social Media and Security

Dr. Scott Wells, co-founder of the Ultimate Knowledge Institute, spoke on the subject of social media foundations and security concepts at the April meeting. During his presentation, Wells highlighted the impact that social media has on today's society from posting photos for family and friends to its role as a mechanism for political change. Wells also spoke on vulnerabilities within social media such as hackers, data profiling/leakage and identity theft. He also gave pointers on methods for protecting yourself, such as restricting who can view personal information (birthday, high school attended) within your social media page. Angie Knappenberger of El Camino High School and Victor Zonana of Mission Hills High School received $1,000 each for their school's submissions to the 2012 Science Teaching Tools Award program.
