Conference and Exhibition Covers Cyber Defense

In May, the chapter held its 16th ITTE Conference and Exhibition, focused not only on theoretical speeches but on practical and real-life demonstrations organized by the chapter's Cyber Security Working Group in cooperation with the Computer Incident Response Capability of the Ministry of Defense of the Czech Republic (MO CIRC), the National Security Authority (NSA), the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and other partners. The conference, which was accompanied by many workshops and an exhibition, focused primarily on defense against cyber attacks on state critical infrastructure. More than 200 cyber experts from government, military, academia and industry discussed all the aspects of recent vulnerabilities, current distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks in the Czech Republic, as well as preparedness of the security teams and existing solutions and technologies supporting the protection of systems. Dusan Navratil, director, NSA, opened the conference explained the role of the NSA and NCSC. He informed attendees about new Czech cyber law, and national and international cooperation. Lt. Gen. Petr Pavel, CZA, chief of the general staff, Czech Armed Forces, spoke about his personal experience with cyber attacks as well as about Czech military mission and vision in cyber defense. During the conference and professional workshops, a team from MO CIRC showed how cyber teams (CERTs) could deal with DoS and DDoS attacks and other cyber threats. Other teams showed some specific solutions for protecting information systems and critical infrastructure. The Cyber Security Working Group, under leadership of Petr Jirasek, and their national and international colleagues prepared the interesting event, which resulted in the need to be focused also on general awareness and education even between professional teams and experts. All participants agreed to continue to share information and to support other regional AFCEA events focused on cybersecurity. Upcoming events on the topic include KIT 2013 organized by the Slovak Chapter in October and an event in Budapest in June 2014.
