ARKLATEX CHAPTER CHAPTER - Jan 19, 2014 |
University President on Global Research Efforts |
In January, the chapter welcomed Dr. Les Guice, president of Louisiana Tech University, as the guest speaker for its monthly membership luncheon. Guice's relationship with Louisiana Tech spans four decades, both as a student and 34 years as faculty member and administrator. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in architecture in 1976 and a Master of Science in civil engineering in 1978, both from Louisiana Tech. Guice went on to earn a Ph.D. in civil engineering from Texas A&M University in 1986. In February 2014, Governor Bobby Jindal also appointed him chairman of the Louisiana Innovation Council. Highlighting the impact of his university on the local and national communities, Guice discussed the cutting-edge research being conducted at Louisiana Tech, the numerous accolades earned by its students and faculty, and their potential impacts on national security. Among the works cited, Louisiana Tech faculty members were present and played an active role in the Nobel Prize-winning discovery of the Higgs-Boson particle. In 2011, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching elevated Louisiana Tech University to its Research University High Research Activity (RU/H) category, placing it among an exclusive group of approximately 100 research universities in the United States to earn this classification. |
