First CEE Student Symposium

A number of events were held in Brno in May that involved direct and major participation of teachers and students of the Police Academy of the Czech Republic in Prague. A conference, "Cyber Security–Results and Challenges," was held at the International Best Western Hotel. The event had "all-star cast," since the organizers invited true legends in the field of information security—from home and abroad—to participate as speakers and panelists. The event was preceded by a tour around The National Cyber Security Centre. The tour and both days of the conference were attended by Josef Pozar, Ph.D., dean of the Faculty of Security Management, National Police Academy (NPA) of the Czech Republic. He was joined on day two by the vice dean of the same faculty, Oldrich Krulik, Ph.D., and five students. The second afternoon was marked by a considerably less formal but all the more dynamic event, the very first "international" meeting of AFCEA student clubs' members in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The event was held at the University of Defence in Brno. The students' performances were presented in the following succession: Police Academy of the Czech Republic in Prague: “Social networks and data mining” and “Social networks and gamers' subculture;” University of Defence in Brno: “False accounts on social networks” and “Bullying on social networks;” Armed Forces Academy of General Milan Rastislav Stefanik: “Safety of DNS Services” and “Windows Safety” The Armed Forces Academy of General Milan Rastislav Stefanik also was represented by Julius Barath, PhD., assistant professor in the Department of Informatics. The event also was attended by representatives of universities that have not set up their AFCEA student clubs yet: Technical University Brno (Ondřej Rysavy and Jan Pluskal); Masaryk University (Milan Čermýk); and University of Economics in Prague (Lucie Bohmova). The University of Defence proved as excellent host. All of this would, however, be hardly possible without the financial, logistical and other support from AFCEA Czech Republic. Chapter President Josef Strelec and AFCEA regional vice president Petr Jirasek, who attended the student event, were pleasantly surprised at both the standard of students' contributions and the rich discussions they generated.
