Grants Help Student Participation at European Conference

With the support of the AFCEA Educational Foundation and Portugal chapter, Jose Valente of the Porto Student Club participated in the 7th AFCEA European Student Conference, organized by AFCEA Europe, which took place in Berlin last October. At the conference, Valente presented an article titled "Coastal surveillance with autonomous sailing vessels." The work demonstrated the capability of the FASt sailboat, a 2.5 m LOA (length overall) autonomous sailing boat developed in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Porto, Portugal, to carry out patrol missions of long duration. Valente received an award for the second best oral presentation and for the best poster at the event. Valente and Professor Jose Carlos Alves, club faculty advisor, had the opportunity to establish contacts with other international attendees from different areas of knowledge, boosting future cooperation between academic research centers.
