Lunch and Learn Focuses on Women in STEM

In May, the chapter held a Young AFCEAN Lunch & Learn event at the Lt. Gen. Timothy J. Maude Complex. Participants enjoyed a presentation on the history of women in AFCEA. Jenifer Spencer, Women in AFCEA representative, shared a documentary about women working in technical fields going back to 1946. Today, 78 percent of positions in the Army are open to women, and women serve in 95 percent of all Army occupations (active-duty and reserve components) as of 2014. The documentary discussed the six brilliant young women who programmed the first all-electronic computer for the U.S. Army as a part of a secret World War II project. After the documentary, participants could speak with women from the AFCEA chapter, hear lessons learned, how they became involved in IT, and other experiences. Spencer is a Michigan native who now resides in Kentucky and has 15 years of experience developing, designing and planning information technology solutions. She has supported multiple clients across the private and government sector, and the majority of her experience is in project management, team "cheerleading" and problem-solving.
