Passing of Chapter Member Melvin H.W. Ing |
The chapter has lost one of its strongest members with the passing of Melvin Ing. Mel, born February 5, 1950, in Honolulu Hawaii, succumbed to brain cancer. Mel was a Distinguished Life Member, past chapter president, vice president and a chairman of the board of directors. He was a very active member and committee lead of many of the TechNet Asia Pacific Conferences. He also chaired the Annual AFCEA Hawaii Golf Tournaments in conjunction with TechNet Asia-Pacific. His extensive knowledge and involvement in the Hawaii business market and continuous support of DOD programs throughout the Pacific Rim, extended over 30 years of his professional career with AT&T Information and Government Solutions, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), CACI and American Electric Company. Mel is survived by his wife Christine, daughter Jennifer (Laureanoclaudio), son-in-law Luis, grandchildren Isaac and Faith, sister Pauline, and brother Benard Ing. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Ko'olau Hawaii. Mel was a 69’ graduate of Punahou High School Hawaii, and an active member of ROTC and sports teams. He served as a board member and contributor of their alumni association. Following graduation, Mel attended Arizona State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in education in 1972 and a Masters of Arts in 1977. Mel furthered his education by obtaining his Executive MBA from University of Hawaii in 1981, as well as attending various executive management programs at the University of California, Berkeley and Stanford University in 1991 and 1995. Mel was a life member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Mel enlisted in the United States Army in January 1973, completed officer’s basic training and was appointed to the 101st Airborne, 327th Infantry Unit (Air Assault). After an 8-year successful career in the Army, Mel received an honorable discharge. Mel’s other honors and affiliations to the military include: past president, national director, life member and council co-chair for the Navy League. Mel was also a life member of 101st Airborne Association. Mel was awarded the Scroll of Honor from the Navy League, Honolulu Council, in 2010 and 2011. Mel was laid to rest on November 21 in Kaneohe, Hawaii at the Hawaii State Veterans cemetery. |
