Commoditization of Encryption and the Military

Nicholas Clark, Defense Department senior security engineer at Intel Security/McAfee, presented "Commoditization of Encryption and the Military" at the chapter's March Lunch and Learn at the Carolina Skies Club, Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina. Clark has more than 20 years of experience with software engineering, configuration, policy, regulation and teaching for commercial and U.S. government agencies. Since 2008, he has consulted on Defense Department endpoint security solutions. Clark spoke about data-at-rest solutions becoming ubiquitous, from military to industry, even down to consumers. Thanks to aging encryption solutions and the acquisition of encryption companies, the number of innovative solution providers is shrinking, he said. As a result, hardware manufacturers and operating system companies have taken up the call to provide encryption as a free add-on feature to their products. Clark asked, "What does this do to the efficacy of encryption for the DOD?" The answer was discussed in detail. This was an AFCEA accredited course toward credit certifications 1 CompTIA CEU A+, Network+ and Security+.
