Diving Into Docker

Britt Dodd of EAB discussed Docker and Docker security at the chapter's April Lunch and Learn event. Developed by Docker Inc. for Linux, Docker performs operating system-level virtualization. Docker uses many features of the Linux kernel to allow independent containers to run within a single Linux instance. Dodd provided many valid points about why organizations should use Docker and covered its security provisions. Dodd once worked for an organization that minimally used virtualization, and now he uses it extensively. With Docker, the scalability of containers alone is enough to make system administrators scream for joy, he said. Differing from VMware, Docker builds its containers per application, allowing scalability at this point. By using Docker, an application is very secure running in its own sandbox. This has many benefits, as applications won't infringe on other applications hosted on the same server. In addition to providing examples of how Docker applies to real-world scenarios, Dodd thoroughly answered questions from audience members. Many asked questions at the end of his presentation. The chapter thanks Dodd for giving the presentation and TEKsystems for sponsoring the event.
