Experts Present at Conference on Satellite Earth Observation for Security and Defense

In November 2018, the European Space Research Institute (ESRIN) in Frascati, the Italian site of the European Space Agency (ESA), hosted the conference, Satellite Earth Observation for Security and Defense: New Technologies and Applications, organized by the chapter along with the agency. Lt. Gen. Antonio Tangorra, ITAF (Ret.), chapter president, welcomed all participants together with Giancarlo Filippazzo, ESA/ESRIN, on behalf of the agency. Before starting the event, Mario Nardi received the Meritorious Service Award by AFCEA International for the support provided to the association. Filippazzo introduced the conference with European Space Agency: Earth Observation and the Copernicus Program, providing a detailed overview of ESA, its organization and the ongoing programs with a particular emphasis on Copernicus. Luca Fasano, ASI, presented COSMO - SkyMed (First and Second Generation): Satellite Remote Sensing and Services for Defense and Security Users, the main Italian program on Earth observation, conceived for both military and civil applications. Col. Raffaele Iovine - IV° Reparto Segredifesa then illustrated The Defense Involvement in Space, Tradition and Innovation for the Nation, underlining the historical background of defense in space, telecommunication and Earth observation, with a dual-use approach. Col. Aniello Violetti - IV° Reparto Stato Maggiore Aeronautica dealt with Suborbital Flight and Launch: New Challenges for the Italian Air Forces, stressing the role of nanosatellites in applications requesting immediate interventions such as maritime surveillance. Dino Quattrociocchi, e-Geos, introduced The Industrial Vision on Earth Observation Data Exploitation and Dual Use Operational Platform, an overview of new applications based on artificial intelligence, big data analysis and deep machine learning. Earth Observation Microwave Payloads: Future Developments presented by Roberto Venturini, Thales Alenia Space, discussed the advantages of microwaves remote sensing, with all-weather and day/night capabilities. Marco Molina, Leonardo S.p.a., presented Leonardo Technologies for Earth Observation, in particular PRISMA, the hyperspectral system for earth monitoring to be launched March 2019 and the new system Aelous for wind monitoring. Giovanni Sylos Labini, Planetek, in his speech The Value Chain Evolution in Earth Observation: New Technologies and Applications for Defense and Security, underlined how new missions are impacting traditional value chains. Sylvain Baissac, Zodiac Data Systems, introduced Meeting on the Ground: the Demand for Satellite-Based Imagery for Defense and Security, showing how new technologies operate in critical conditions where satellite imagery isn't available. Prof. Giovanni Pugliano, Parthenope University, presented Satellite Earth Observation: New Technologies and Applications for Surveillance, underlining the contribution of geomatics in the management of natural disasters. Francesca Temussi, Thales Alenia Space, introduced The involvement of di Thales Alenia Space Italia in Copernicus Missions (ESA-EU), detailing the activities for Sentinel 1 A & B, and the coordination of new missions. Dr. Maria Fabrizia Buongiorno, INGV, ended the conference with Satellite Data in Research and Applications in Earth Science: the role of INGV, focused on the relevance of satellite big data for the analysis of Earth phenomena.
