ABERDEEN CHAPTER CHAPTER - Jan 31, 2019

Army Leaders Showcase Plans for Multidomain Dominance

In January, the chapter hosted a brand-new government forum event, designed to give its members a glimpse at the direction and future vision for Army networks. The chapter was joined by special guest speakers Maj. Gen. David Bassett, USA, program executive officer (PEO) for Command, Control, and Communications-Tactical (C3T), and Maj. Gen. Peter Gallagher, USA, director of the Network Cross-Functional Team (CFT) under the newly established Army Futures Command (AFC). Together, Gen. Bassett and Gen. Gallagher took the stage to present a simplified version of the capability sets needed to create the Integrated Tactical Network of 2028, with a vision of multidomain dominance. Each of these capability sets is tied to a specific fiscal year for deployment, and they are being rolled out in two-year iterations. Capability Set 21, or CapSet21, is the first of these rollouts and focuses on "expeditionary and intuitive" applications and network devices; smaller, lighter, and faster communications systems; increased connectivity through multiple routes; and improved network security and management systems. CapSet23, "capacity and resiliency," will deliver increased bandwidth; high-capacity satellite communications; initial cloud capability; increased mobility for maneuver; and anti-jamming capability. In CapSet25, "automated and protected," the AFC will deliver cloud capability; automated network management and decision-making tools; increased network security and faster connectivity; advanced air-ground communications; and combat and tactical vehicle mobile command posts. Finally, CapSet27, "multidomain dominance," the final step toward the Network of 2028, will focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities; cyber improvements; reduced electromagnetic signature; common applications across formations; and hardened wireless connectivity. Each of these areas is of vital importance to the four major priorities of the AFC's tactical network plan, which include a unified network, common operating environment, joint and coalition interoperability and mobility and survivability of the Army's Command Post. In addition to a sold-out crowd, the chapter also hosted several VIP guests at this event, such as local and state government staffers, military officials and Department of Defense and AFCEA International news outlets.
