ABERDEEN CHAPTER CHAPTER - May 21, 2019

Chapter Presents $89K in Local STEM Awards

At the Annual Scholarship Awards Dinner in May, the chapter was proud to commit more than $89,000 in scholarships and grants to STEM students and educators from the local area. These funds are pledged to benefit both high school and community college transfers who are pursuing a four-year degree in a STEM field, as well as local educators and schools that are inspiring the next generation of leaders in STEM professions. Awards included the presentation of the first Cyber Defense Full Scholarship, a partnership with Harford Community College, Bel Air, Maryland; two Science Teacher Toolkit Awards; five STEM Awards for local teachers; two scholarships for community college transfer students; and six high school scholarships for graduating seniors. The guest speaker for the event was Kerry Anne Kedzierski, a physics teacher at North East High School, North East, Maryland, and a two-time grant recipient of chapter STEM grants, who spoke to the benefit of receiving these funds to purchase advanced equipment and prepare her students for college-level physics. Maj. Gen. Randy Taylor, USA, the former senior commander of Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), was also a featured speaker at the event, in one of his last public appearances as the leader of APG. Gen. Taylor shared many success stories of STEM students who have been recruited to work on post, and he excitedly discussed how 98 candidates were hired on the spot at the career fair during the Advanced Planning Briefing for Industry in April. The Awards Dinner also included the induction of the Aberdeen Executive Committee for the 2019-2020 year, as well as a celebration to honor former Vice President of Education Jeff Murter, who is stepping away from the volunteer role after seven years in office. The chapter thanks Murter for everything that he's done to launch the chapter's education program and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavors.
