Cryptography and Cryptotechnologies

In May, the chapter organized the conference, Cryptography and Cryptotechnologies: From the Encryption of Restricted Information to the Current Applications in Civil and Military Domains, in collaboration with Consorzio De Componendis De Cifris. The workshop represented an opportunity to navigate through the state-of-the-art cryptography in different sectors, providing an overview of the contribution of institutions, universities and industries. Lt. Gen A. Tangorra, ITAF (Ret.), chapter president, introduced the Consorzio De Cifris, involved in the workshop in emerging technology, with an increasing role in data protection and global exchange. The De Cifris Consortium opened the conference with a speech introducing the National Cryptologic Centre, which is tasked with designing and validating cryptographic algorithms that can be used for public administration. Andrea Visconti, assistant professor, Department of Computer Science, Università degli Studi di Milano, presented Data Protection with Cryptography, focused on the standard to validate cryptographic algorithms and ensuring data protection. Luigi Accardi, Università degli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata, spoke on Developments in Current Cryptography and illustrated recent activities developed by the Centro Volterra, Tor Vergata, using basic principles of cryptographic theories, to guarantee higher performances than the current algorithms. Paolo Ciocca, CONSOB, provided an overview of Cryptography in Finance, underlining how cryptography achieved a consolidated presence in the civil world, especially in finance that represents a significant test bed for cryptography civil applications. Brig. Gen. Francesco Vestito, ITAF, Stato Maggiore Della Difesa (SMD), Chief Information Officer Committee (CIOC), introduced the CIOC's point of view with Cybersecurity in Defense, highlighting how cryptography is considered an important asset of the national strategic assets even if the CIOC's original focus was cyber. In addition, Gen. Vestito underlined the need to expand cryptography to the daily activities of organizations, without being restricted to the current domains demanding confidentiality. Simone Tacconi, Servizio Polizia Postale e delle Comunicazioni, presented Strategies for the Introduction of Cryptography in Digital Investigations, showing activities such as cryptanalytic attacks and unconventional interception, which are used by law enforcement agencies to address the use of cryptography in illegal activities. Security in Operational Communications: Evolution and Perspectives presented by Marco Morini from Leonardo S.p.A., emphasized how security represents the crucial component of information superiority. Marco Pedicini, Università degli Studi Roma Tre, in his speech Cryptography and Crypto Technologies, illustrated evolutions that widened the scope of cryptography in new scenarios such as blockchain, cloud computing, and biometry. Donato Cappetta, Eustema S.p.A., presented Cryptography and Blockchain for the Document's End-to-End Encryption, an interesting use case of application of cryptography and blockchain for the protection of documents and data inside an organization. Giuseppe Ciano, IBM Italia, presented From Blockchain to Quantum Computing: Future Scenarios of Cryptography, which touched on new IBM activities focused on cryptography, in particular blockchain and quantum computing. In the end, Marco Braccioli, senior vice president, Area S.p.A., presented Quantum Computing: Opportunity or Threat for Cryptography and Cybersecurity, illustrating quantum computing concepts. The president thanked the speakers for their contribution and the numerous attendees for the participation.
