In October, the chapter officers met Nancy Temple, vice president, Educational Foundation, Sarah Fischetti and Brenda Puch. We look forward to working with chapter leadership to develop teacher grant opportunities for the schools in Ecuador to include schools in the Galapagos Islands.
María Dolores Santos, chapter president, began the meeting discussing the chapter overview. Grace Unda, regional coordinator Insular or Galápagos, explained about Galapagos´needs in adaptating to virtual education.
Elementary and high school students from San Cristóbal - Galapagos need to be provided with technological tools and practical methodologies that facilitate adaptation to online learning in a motivating way and according to current reality. To achieve this result, three components have been identified: academic tutoring, virtual training, and interactivity with the community. These tools and methods will specifically benefit children six to 12 years of age and youth 12 to 18 years of age.
"Sarah and I are so excited to work with the Ecuador chapter and support those in AFCEA's South America region with greater access to STEAM education programs and activities,' Temple said. 'To begin, we recommend the establishment of a program that models the one we executed last year with schools in Europe. We envision a similar program could be developed for your region. We can develop a grant program for classroom teachers that will provide funding for STEAM classroom projects and learning materials, hardware and software. We will also begin researching the opportunity to provide a STEM Teacher Scholarship in your region,' she relayed. "Administration of this program should be fairly simple for the Ecuador Chapter.'
Members of the chapter will identify school(s) or teacher(s) prepared to conduct STEM learning activities. Then, the chapter, in conjunction with the school/teacher, will prepare a description of the activity, the location, and the number of children impacted. Finally, assisting members will provide a detailed budget (not to exceed U.S. $1,000) for the project materials.
