ALAMO CHAPTER CHAPTER - Jul 19, 2022

Delivering Cyberspace Superiority Is a Priority

The chapter welcomed Col. Thomas Bodnar, USAF, commander, 318th Cyberspace Group, to its latest monthly luncheon in July. Col. Bodnar leads the development of cyber capabilities and tactics, techniques and procedures in support of the Cyber Mission Force. He discussed what cyber looks like today. "We are defining capabilities as we train and equip warfighters to deliver cyberspace superiority." Col. Bodnar explained that there is a focus on improving the readiness of the groups under his command. Three concepts are being looked at to hone in on readiness: conceptual change, policy change and tool change. With a conceptual change, agile capability is needed. A unified requirements process to bring the right tools and capabilities into fruition requires a policy change. Finally, a tool change that moves the current myriad of tools into a common framework where resources can be used currently and over a period of time. "We have too many tools as is. What we need is intellectual capital." Readiness of the force requires the understanding that there are gaps and overlap in mission sets within the group. Training, exercising, weapons and tactics all play a part in overcoming the current challenges airmen face today. A ready and capable force is at the core of delivering the nation's cyberspace superiority.
