In November 2022, at the Casa dell'Aviatore in Rome, the conference "Protecting the Future: Emerging Technological Trends Shaping the Future of Defence" was held, organized by the chapter and corporate partner Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial Division team members. Gen. Antonio Tangorra, ITAF (Ret.), chapter president, introduced the day, underlining the important contribution of innovative technologies in support of "Situational Awareness" to have technological supremacy in the military world. Hexagon's Italian management then presented its divisions and the proposal in the defence sector. Giovanni Fumia, sales and account manager, Italy, introduced the agenda of the day and later moderated the event.
The first speech was by Domingos Lourenco, regional manager and country manager, Italy, who illustrated the digital reality solutions for increasingly autonomous and more sustainable systems.
Lourenco underlined the importance of digital data to shift the capabilities of systems from simple automatisms to a more complete and secure autonomy, highlighting the evolution of Hexagon to offer a unique solution, merging the real world with the virtual world, the so-called Smart Digital Reality. Only when all data is available, exploitable in real time and contextualized in one place, can we provide a complete view of ever-changing situations. Using technologies such as machine learning and artificial intelligence, systems can be created to reduce, or even eliminate, human intervention. Lourenco discussed how Hexagon's Smart Digital Reality solutions are increasingly being applied in the world of defence.
Subsequently, Vincent Rifici, director of defence, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), explained how Hexagon technology is now a critical component of emerging innovations in the defence sector, where the demand for high-performance platforms incorporating new capabilities is growing to create a strategic and tactical advantage.
Lucio Cesarano, product manager at e-Geos, presented the capabilities of the brAInt system, in which the 4DVA (4D visual analyzer) component was based on Hexagon's LuciadFusion and LuciadRIA technologies.
The workshop resumed with Richard Goodman and Saurabh Kumar, EMEA pre-sales engineer, who showed how Hexagon plays a key role in emerging technologies for defence, introducing some of its solutions such as Tactical Cloud, M.App X, XALT, Luciad, Digital Twin. Several application examples of these technologies have been shown in aeronautics, land, maritime, unmanned aerial vehicles and border security.
Finally, Derrold Holcomb, product manager, ERDAS RADAR, spoke about the applicability of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from satellites. Demonstrating the capabilities of SAR data in all weather, sea and land conditions, Holcomb highlighted ease of use for operators, detecting tracks, surface changes, oil spills, vehicle movements and deep learning-based feature extraction.
