Spring Conference Highlights Artificial Intelligence in the Military

In May, the chapter organized the conference "Artificial Intelligence in the Military: New Solutions and Evolutions of Use" in Rome to offer an update on this topic, bearing in mind that artificial intelligence (AI) also is beginning to revolutionize military operations. From supporting command and control tools and contributing to decision-making processes to training military personnel and spanning from logistics to strategic planning, AI is making an impact.

Maj. Francesco Corso, Segredifesa, presented "Artificial Intelligence in Defense: Research and Technological Innovation Activities," focusing on the guidelines of military technological innovation defined in NATO and the European Defense Agency, which are also guidelines for Italian NAD's technological research projects.

Col. Fabio Zanichelli, Italian Air Force (IAF) Logistics Command, introduced "The New Air Force Infologistics System," framed in the digitization process of the IAF. In this framework, Logistics Command has undertaken the "IRIS" project, implementing all the latest 4.0 technologies in a cyber secure-by-design environment, in which data sovereignty is completely available to the Armed Forces.

Gabriele Tonini, Leonardo, then presented "Artificial Intelligence at the Service of the Customer Journey," zooming from predictive maintenance services to the automation of iterative human-machine actions to adaptive training models that dramatically improve the customer experience throughout the customer journey.

"OSINT and CLOSINT: Resources for Evaluating and Changing the Approach to Intelligence in the Age of Artificial Intelligence," was covered by Nicola Grandis, Digital Platforms, with an excursus on the changes introduced by AI to society and the approach to information.

Francesco Orlando, Teleconsys, spoke on "Integration of Artificial Intelligence in an OSINT Data Platform: Tearing Maya's Veil From Information" and highlighted how in OSINT platforms, the application of the latest AI techniques to automate processes can optimize the phases of analysis, comparison and validation of collected data.

Marco Barbina, Leonardo, spoke on "Present and Future of AI in Leonardo' and presented current AI technologies adopted in the company's systems, and developments expected in the near future based on research activities exploring possibilities for future systems.

Cmdr. Gianluca Maria Marcilli, NAVARM, spoke on "Validation and Testing of Artificial Intelligence Systems" and introduced the concept of "AI trustworthiness," mandatory in the military field for assessing the suitability of AI components for "safe" use. With this in mind, the experience of the Artificial Intelligence Sandboxing (ArIS) research project was also presented, which aims to create a test environment based on the use of adversary AI.

Glauco Cenciotti, IBM, and Angela Sebastianelli, IBM VAR Group partner, presented "IBM AI@WORK: The Opportunities of Applied, Data-Centric Artificial Intelligence," providing an overview of the most relevant use cases to uncover the concrete competitive advantage that organizations will gain from preparing AI data for their future development.

Silvia M. Ansaldi, INAIL, concluded with "Artificial Intelligence Techniques for the Analysis of Quasi-Accidents in Industrial Environments," illustrating the EsOpIA (Operational Experiences and Artificial Intelligence) research engine created by INAIL that provides additional tools for evaluating safety management models in establishments, measuring their effectiveness and improving safety.
