In July, the AFCEA NOVA Small Business Committee welcomed the Department of State's George Price. Price assumed the role of the director of the Office of Small Disadvantaged Business Utilization in 2015. He is responsible for strategy advisement within the Department of State on small business procurement.
Price provided the audience with important fundamentals to ensure small businesses are equipped for success. He emphasized the need to utilize basic business principles and relationship-building strategies. He also stressed that small businesses should clearly articulate their benefits and differentiators while aligning those to the State Department's needs.
During his presentation, Price explained that the role of the program manager is highly visible because this person not only acts as the face of the program but also represents the small business. Price advised hiring managers to consider their staffing choices carefully for this critical role.
He also covered the bidding process. Proposal responses should be responsible and responsive, demonstrating the firm's ability to meet all RFP [request for proposal] requirements. He suggested that small businesses capitalize on flattened organizational structures by highlighting the ease of contacting their decision-makers.
