Chapter Holds Sustainability in Space Event

In September, the chapter's Women in AFCEA organized an event: Sustainability in Space: a New Frontier. The event was held in Rome, at the Università Tor Vergata, to debate the different aspects of sustainability, such as space situation awareness, among female professionals and scientists in the space sector. They also considered inclusion as a part of sustainability in a sector where the presence of women in STEM is increasing.

After a welcome address by Fiorella Lamberti, Leonardo, Loredana Santo, chapter women outreach leader and Space Sustainability Centre coordinator, Università di Roma Tor Vergata, introduced the research center, which was established in 2021 to perform interdisciplinary space sustainability activities.

Giuseppina Piccirilli, communication and press, ASI, chaired the workshop, introducing the first keynote speech, "Sustainability of the Space Environment: the Defence's Perspective," by Col. Giuseppe Gentile, SMD UGS, underlining how sustainability in space is necessary to protect and secure space assets.

The second keynote, "Space Sustainability: an Engineering Challenge," by Marina Ruggieri, Università Tor Vergata - Engineering Department, expressed the urgency to intervene with a system approach on the design of missions and systems where space is closely integrated with ground assets.

Alessandra Di Cecco, ASI, concluded the keynotes with the speech, "ASI Ground-based Projects for Space Activities Sustainability," detailing the main ASI projects focused on space debris and international cooperations.

"Mitigation Actions for Space Sustainability,' by Annamaria Nassisi and Eleonora Moltoni, Thales Alenia Space Italia, showed how sustainability depends on threat mitigation actions and satellite disposal, as well as on technological solutions such as satellite removal or refueling.

Annamaria De Biase, Thales Alenia Space, presented "ECO Design: Space Sustainability as an Extension of Earth," discussing the new design approach for CO2 emission reduction, using low environmental impact materials and smaller equipment with low energy consumption.

After the break, Eugenia Finocchiaro, CEO, Crisel, presented "Orbital Services for Space Situational Awareness," introducing the CRISEL technologies developed to manage in-orbit satellites with services based on wide bade acquisition of satellite signals, allowing quick maneuvers or interventions.

"Space Sustainability: Tyvak International Solutions," presented by Margherita Cardi, Tyvak International, illustrated how Tyvak International is defining concrete actions such as sustainable design, long-term planning of space assets life cycle and technologies for space debris active removal.

Francesca Lillo, AVIO S.p.A, presented "Space Propulsion as Pillar of the Space Economy: Developments and Sustainability," underlining the role of space launchers industry and of space propulsion as fundamental to making a wider use of space sustainable.

"Problems With Overcrowded Space," presented by Veronica Vissicchio, highlighted that space is a strategic domain, showing the main problems in this ecosystem, the reasons for its overcrowding and the state of the art for mitigation actions.

After a lively debate, Lamberti and Piccirilli thanked all the speakers and the audience, inviting them to follow the chapter initiatives.
