Event Highlights New Scenarios in Private Cloud and Open Source Virtualization

In October, with the collaboration of Vates Italia, the chapter organized an event titled, "Private Cloud and Open Source Virtualization: The New Scenarios.' Vates has long-term experience in the development of sustainable open-source virtualization systems, the data centre operating system, for public administrations and private companies in terms of cost and energy.

After a welcome address by Gen. Antonio Tangorra, ITAF (Ret.), chapter president, Leandro Aglieri, president and CEO of Vates Italia, illustrated the company strategy and the related customers in his speech titled "Open Source Virtualization." He also introduced the keynote speaker Alessandro Musumeci, chief technical staff of the innovation undersecretary of the Italian government. "Open Source in Public Administration" presented by Musumeci, highlighted the strategy of the current government related to the open source in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), underlining how the NRRP represents a unique opportunity to innovate the country, and the financial resources must be used on innovation, investing in cloud and open systems.

Then, Col. Marco Agabiti, V Reparto Segredifesa, Research and Innovation, gave a presentation about "Open Source in Research and Defence," illustrating the opportunities in defence provided by the National Plan for Military Research and the other European and NATO funding systems.

Commander Cataldo Colizzi, Network Operations Command (COR), presented, "The SCIPIO (Solution for Complete Information Protection by Infrastructure Openness) Programme in the Network Operations Command," illustrating the open-source architectures that COR is implementing inside the data centre for the development of Italian Ministry of Defence mission-critical applications.

The presentation "The CertHPCDoc Research Project," was given by Alessandro Massa, Leonardo, who provided a detailed description of the PNRM project and the security certification of classified documentation management over HPC carried out by Leonardo and Vates to study and prototype how to certify a hardware and software platform based on high-performance computing.

Davide Lamanna Rios, la Rete Italiana Open Source, gave a speech presenting trends and future scenarios for private cloud in Italy in an open-source approach.

The two final presentations, "The Open Source Virtualization Company: the Road Map," by Olivier Lambert, CEO of Vates, and "The Open Source Virtualization Company: the Development Strategy," by Charles Schulz, group chief strategy officer, underlined the strategic scenario of the virtualization context, with the acquisition of VMWARE by Broadcomm and the transformation of Citrix in Tibco, as well as the Vates strategy for the Vates Virtualization Stack.

A final demo displayed the capability and the user-friendly approach of the Vates console, developing a full operation capacity in the Italian sites with the Venezia plan to become the Vates Research Centre.
Gen. Tangorra concluded the workshop by thanking all the participants and Vates, remarking on the success of the workshop.
