Conference on Surveillance and Airspace Defense in Italy Held in Rome

In November of 2023, the year that marked the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Italian Air Force (IAF), the chapter organized, under the patronage of the IAF, the conference "Surveillance and Airspace Defense in Italy: the Air Force at the Service of National Security" at the Urbe Airport in Rome.

The event made it possible to highlight the organizational, operational and technological aspects of Italy's surveillance and air defense system, emphasizing the expertise and cutting-edge technology that characterize the Air Force.

After the introduction and greetings by Lt. Gen. Antonio Tangorra, ITAF (Ret.), chapter president, two keynote speeches were presented: the first by Lt. Gen. Alberto Biavati, commander of Air Fleet Command, who spoke about "The Air Force: Airspace Surveillance and Defense." The second presentation was given by Manlio Cuccaro of Leonardo, who illustrated "Air Defense Between New Threats and an Integrated Approach." Keynote speeches were followed by presentations of great interest.

Col. Filippo Monti, IAF, commander, 4th Fighter Wing, presented "NATO and National QRA."

Following this, Col. Patrizio Emiliani, Procurement Directorate TELEDIFE, spoke about "The Evolution of National Air Defense from a Technology Perspective."

The presentations by military speakers ended with Col. Felice D'Anelli, IAF Logistic Command, who spoke on "The Technical-Operational Support to Air Defense by the Logistics Command 3rd Division.'

Paolo Nasetti and Andrea Capolei, ENAV, gave a presentation on "The Contribution of the ENAV Group to Air Defense."

Next were two industrial presentations. Domenico Vigilante, Leonardo, spoke on "The New Generation of Leonardo Cognitive Radar VLRs and Their Applications: From Space Situation Awareness to Ballistic and Hypersonic Missile Defense," explaining the development activities in the radar sector.

Emanuele Bergamo and Giuseppe De Federicis, Maticmind, presented "AI-driven Video Analysis in Support of Airborne Security Systems."

Concluding the presentations, Patrizia Livreri, professor, CNIT-Lab RaSS, Pisa/Palermo University, presented "Towards a Long-range Microwave Quantum Radar," exposing the status of activities for quantum radar.

Gen. Tangorra concluded the conference by presenting two awards given by AFCEA International: the Meritorious Service Award to Brig. Gen. Aldo Giannatiempo, IAF, and the Medal of Merit to Vincenzo Vitiello.
