From Business Continuity to Disaster Recovery to Cyber Resiliency

The chapter, along with corporate member Pure Storage, organized the event "From Business Continuity to Disaster Recovery to Cyber Resiliency," which was held in April at the Casa dell'Aviatore, IAF Officer Club.

The workshop was opened by Lt. Gen. Antonio Tangorra, ITAF (Ret.), chapter president. Gen. Tangorra later introduced Lt. Col. Gianluigi Me of the Carabinieri, who spoke about the types of cyber threats each organization should defend against by describing best practices for securing their data proactively rather than reactively.

This was followed by a presentation about Pure Storage, delivered by Paolo Fontana, the country manager in Italy. Pure Storage offers the industry's best platform for storing, managing and protecting data. With a cloud experience that spans across a storage operating environment unified, Pure Storage offers customers the ability to respond to changing data needs quickly and at scale while reducing total cost of ownership. Data protection strategies are not always able to withstand ransomware attacks and Pure Storage helps reduce attacks by protecting crucial data from modification or destruction and providing a secure location to quickly restore after an attack.

Simone Di Mambro, systems engineer, and Umberto Galtarossa, partner technical manager EMEA North and South, explained in more detail how data storage infrastructure solutions can help to counter. Protecting data to prevent its loss, corruption and theft becomes a priority for business managers. Ransomware is one of the most common forms of malware today. Effective backup solutions can help mitigate the risk of data loss and significantly speed up data recovery.

Downtime is the most costly aspect of a ransomware attack. According to Statista, the average time of downtime for a company after a cyber attack is about 22 days, a worrying figure.

Moreover, according to recent ESG research, nine out of 10 respondents said that as early as the second hour after data loss, their organization begins to experience a significant negative impact. It is therefore critical that organizations adopt technologies and processes to protect themselves.

Backup remains a key activity for data protection, but it is not enough. Essentially, a two-pronged approach is required: the regular execution of immutable copies of data and the availability of the infrastructure needed to quickly restore data from backups at scale.

At Pure Storage, this approach has been advanced with a solution called SafeMode Snapshots, which consists of immutable snapshots that prevent ransomware attackers from deleting or modifying backups. Then there is the ability to restore data as quickly as possible since backups have a limit if operations cannot be restored quickly. Leading solutions boast recovery performance of up to many hundreds of terabytes per hour at scale, enabling organizations to restore systems within hours rather than weeks and be up and running again with minimal impact.

In addition, following an attack, storage arrays are often locked down for forensic investigation: by ensuring clean arrays, Pure Storage enables customers to restore data more quickly.
