Cybersecurity in Constant Evolution

In October, the conference Cybersecurity in Constant Evolution was held at the Casa dell'Aviatore in Rome, organized by the chapter together with Fortinet.

In the context of digital transformation, the cloud is confirming itself as an important growth trend with innovative services such as SASE (Secure Access Service Edge), which combines advanced data transport technologies (SD-WAN) with advanced SSE (Security Service Edge) security services such as: Zero Trust Network Access, Next-Generation Firewall, Secure Web Gateway, Cloud Access Security Broker. Mobile security and zero-trust access to services are increasingly demanded by all organizations.

The large amount of data and information requires analysis tools based on machine learning and generative AI, with the ability to identify anomalies quickly and ensure adequate reaction times.

In recent years, it has become increasingly important to anticipate the detection of cyber threats, particularly in the initial phase of attack preparation. Active Deception solutions, which take the legacy concept of "honeypot" and improve its effectiveness, both in terms of management and integration, automation and incident response, are therefore becoming more effective.

In this context, Fortinet presented its main highly innovative protection solutions in the defense and intelligence sectors.

Massimo Palermo, vice president and country manager, Fortinet Italy and Malta, opened the session with a speech, The Fortinet Vision, in which he discussed the current and future of the cyber landscape based on threat intelligence data and the company's privileged vantage point. At the end, he focused on the resources that Fortinet deploys to fight cyber crime: the close collaboration with the most relevant institutional bodies and the Fortinet Security Academy.

Next, Angelo Tofalo, CEO of AT Agency, gave an overview of the evolution of the regulatory framework in the field of cybersecurity, emphasizing that there is still much to be done and how much the support of the entire community is needed.

Fabrizio Cassoni, manager, Systems Engineering, Fortinet Defense, Central Public, then addressed the topic of new cloud technologies and Fortinet's proposal in the field of SASE, with the Sovereign SASE, which, while addressing the zero-trust approach, also becomes suitable for critical infrastructure contexts for the country-system.

Capt. Fabrizio Cocco, Air Force Automated Information Systems Department, spoke on Deception To Protect - Cyber Deception as a Proactive Defence Frontier, and illustrated the benefits of deception in relation to the activities of a Security Operation Centre.

This was followed by Aldo Di Mattia, Senior Manager Systems Engineering, who spoke about the new frontier represented by artificial intelligence and its uses to date in the areas of attack and defense, focusing in particular on the wide adoption Fortinet is making to try to stay one step ahead of cyber crime.

Finally, Chapter President Antonio Tangorra closed the event, thanking Fortinet for the extensive overview provided on the latest generation of cyber threats and new defense strategies, and emphasizing AFCEA's focus on cybersecurity issues.
