Chapter Holds Conference on Disruptive Technologies in Defense and Security

In November, the chapter organized the 'Disruptive Technologies Enabling Defence and Security' conference to explore the role of disruptive technologies in defense and security, involving institutional, academic and industrial experts.

Lt. Gen. Antonio Tangorra, ITAF (Ret.), chapter president, opened the day by emphasizing the importance of emerging technologies.

In his speech 'Disruptive Technologies and Strategic Autonomy: Challenges and Opportunities of the Next European Commission,' Vittorio Calaprice outlined the European Union's priorities to address economic and geopolitical challenges, focusing on innovation and resilience. Rear Adm. Massimo Esposito, Italian Navy (Ret.), general manager of AFCEA Europe, discussed 'New Technologies and Future Wars' and outlined how EDTs are transforming conflicts and the role of AFCEA.

Massimo Artini and Cmdr. Raffaele Rotella introduced respectively DIANA (Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic), NATO's initiative to connect talent and technologies and the EUR 1 billion NIF-Nato Innovation Fund to support EDTs. Maj. Gen. Michele Oballa from the Italian Air Force Logistics Command with 'Infologistics and Logistics 4.0 Concepts in the Air Force,' presented Infologistics 4.0 and the IRIS system to optimize aviation operations. Daniele Di Noto from Teleconsys presented the '3D-RDS Project - Redeployment Digital Survey To Innovate Air Force Logistics Support,' which integrates three-dimensional surveys and digital twins for military logistics.

Andrea Corbelli of IBM presented 'IBM Technologies To Support National Defence' discussed the contribution of IBM technologies, including hybrid cloud and quantum computing, and the role of the IBM Rome Cyber Academy.

In the presentation 'Naval Digital Platform: Cloud Technologies for the Multi Capability Carrier' Gianluca Marcilli, Italian Navy, illustrated the adoption of cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) on Navy ships for technological and operational benefits. Nicola Grandis from DigitalPlatform with 'Artificial Intelligence, Challenges and Opportunities for the Armed Force' highlighted the potential of AI in defense, while Nicola Franzoso from Maticmind presented 'The Key . . . Is the Key' and explained how AI improves data security with advanced algorithms.

Finally, T. Col. Luciano Cioccolo and Maj. Gen. Bruno Di Palma from Secretariat General of Defense/National Armaments Directorate presented the speech 'Military Research Activities Pertaining to EDTs in the National and International Sphere' and discussed national and international military research projects.

Tangorra concluded the event by emphasizing how disruptive technologies are changing society.
