SOUTH FLORIDA CHAPTER CHAPTER - Jan 23, 2008 |
In January the chapter recognized its Science Teaching Tools efforts, marking 2007 as the first year it has been able to award the educational grants. One $1,000 grant went to earth science teacher Alfonso Livingston from Norland Middle School in Miami Gardens, Florida. Livingston's submission outlined the need for funds to purchase experimental supplies and an LCD monitor and printer for the science department's computer lab. The second $1,000 grant went to seventh grade science teacher Jesse Stacy from Leadership Academy in Tamarac, Florida. Leadership Academy, a school for students with learning disabilities or other emotional or physical handicaps, is in its first year and initially had no science supplies. The school is funded primarily from the McKay Scholarships for Students with Disabilities program. Stacy's submission requested funding for equipment such as microscopes, a weather station, binoculars and solar system teaching tools. |
