MARIANAS CHAPTER CHAPTER - Jan 23, 2008

In January newly elected officers were installed during a ceremony featuring Rear Adm. Bill French, USN, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Marianas, as the keynote speaker. Dr. Claudette Millsap, president-elect, who is chief information officer for the Commander Naval Forces Marianas, said the local chapter was formed in the 1960s but later "fizzled out." In November 2007 she and several of her peers got together to revitalize the then-defunct chapter. After dozens of phone calls encouraging fellow communications and technology professionals, the small group grew its membership to about 50 people. "What we try to do is promote the technical education of the folks on Guam (through) scholarships for sailors and internships, grants and other programs," Millsap said. She said competitive grants will be available to local public high school science teachers to help them expand their curriculum. French said the future promises much opportunity but work is needed before the island can take full advantage of them.
