Better Battlefield Visualization

The May chapter luncheon featured Col. John R. "Buck" Surdu, USA, program manager, Information Processing Technology Office, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, who discussed the Deep Green Project. He explained that the project is an effort to build a battle command decision support system, at the brigade level, that interleaves anticipatory planning with adaptive execution. This will enable the commander to think ahead, to identify when a plan is going awry and to develop alternatives "ahead of real time." According to Col. Surdu, Deep Green will aid in battle command and battlefield visualization. With that crucial information, the commander can make better decisions. In addition, Deep Green must comply with current and future modeling and simulation standards.
