Cyberdefense Discussion Proves Timely

The chapter's February Young AFCEAN event, a discussion on cyberdefense and how to counter operational system attacks, proved to be particularly timely after the German armed forces experienced a recent malware attack. The incident led to the armed forces adopting a new network operations force. Martin Bierwirth, Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI), an information technology security agency; Lt. Col. Norbert Wildstacke, information technology office, German Armed Forces; Stefan Reuter, AG, a security company; and Tillmann Werner, Bonn University, served as guest speakers at the event. Werner discussed new implementations for intrusion detection, a presentation that earned him the chapter's first outstanding student award. The event ended with a concluding thought: An attack upon a nation's information technology system could cause the nation to fall.
