Small Business Innovation Research

Beyond SBIR/Bridging the Valley of Death

SBIR companies often encounter significant challenges in scaling their innovations to meet the complex demands and broader scopes of non-SBIR Federal R&D projects while also targeting dual-use industry applications, requiring substantial adaptation in both technology and business strategy. On the federal side, navigating the intricate landscape of regulatory compliance and securing adequate funding beyond the initial SBIR grants can be a formidable barrier, demanding astute financial planning and strategic partnerships. Moreover, transitioning from the relatively small-scale, prototype-focused environment of SBIR to the competitive and rigorous world of commercial industry and large-scale Federal R&D necessitates robust intellectual property management, market alignment, and the ability to forge and maintain strategic collaborations with larger industry and government entities.

The goal of this session is to demystify the pathways for small businesses currently engaged in SBIR Phase I and II, and for relevant large business/government stakeholders, providing them with a clearer understanding of the opportunities and strategies for transitioning into and succeeding in non-SBIR R&D initiatives.
