VALLEY OF THE SUN CHAPTER - 10/14/2022

The student section of the chapter recently observed the Cyber Security Career Awareness Week declared by the National Institute for Cybersecurity Education by holding a meeting at the Western Maricopa Education Center's (West-MEC) Verrado campus. West-MEC is a comprehensive Career and Technical Education center serving 16 school districts with four campuses across the Phoenix area.

The session, presented by John McMillin, chapter treasurer, as part of the quarterly computer security program advisory council meeting, focused on the principles of Zero Trust-Continual Trust Verification Environment as defined by the National Cyber Center of Excellence. West-MEC's computer security students are eager participants in cyber exercises around the world, including the AFCEA-sponsored Midnight Sun competition coordinated by Harri Larson from the University of Stockholm. Networking during the 2014 Annual ACESA Summit in March are (l-r) Everett Greenli, past president/treasurer, Arizona Council of Engineering and Scientific Associations (ACESA); Caroline VanIngen-Dunn, ACESA education/industry coordinator; Ray Quackenbush, ACESA past president; Michael Andrews, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Region 6 director; Diane Slazinik, chapter vice president of scholarships and science fairs; and Matt Blair, ACESA president. The 2014 Annual ACESA Summit held in Phoenix in March focused on “Industry and Educators Inspired to Create Great Students.” Dr. William Harris, president and chief executive officer of Science Foundation Arizona (SFAz), and Jeff Goldberg, dean of engineering at the University of Arizona, were the keynote speakers. Also speaking were representatives of companies and professional organizations around Arizona describing their science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) initiatives. ACESA, the Arizona Council of Engineering and Scientific Associations, is an association of associations with a goal of serving as an umbrella under which all Arizona engineering and scientific associations can collaborate to increase their reach, reduce redundancy and improve their ability to affect change in the STEM arena throughout Arizona. VALLEY OF THE SUN CHAPTER - 11/09/2009
In November, Larry Bingaman (r), deputy regional vice president, presents an AFCEA Educational Foundation scholarship check to Frank Wilson. Wilson received an AFCEA Scholarship for Working Professionals, which will assist him in his pursuit of a Ph.D. He will use the degree as to work as a mathematics professor. Garry Matheson, chapter president, led a panel discussion on the chapter's outreach program at the November meeting. Multiple initiatives were discussed, and an implementation plan will be developed. Frank Wilson, guest speaker, briefed the chapter members on his work as a college professor in the mathematics and business departments at Northcentral University. Wilson is a recipient of AFCEA's Scholarship for Working Professionals for his Ph.D. in business quantitative methods.
