WIESBADEN CHAPTER - 12/06/2018
In December 2018, members of the chapter served as guest judges for the 10th Annual Department of Defense Education Activity STEMposium. The goal of the STEMposium was to engage students, who are typically underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, with relevant hands-on training that could potentially translate to transferable skills in future academic opportunities or the workforce. More than 100 students broke into 24 engineering teams. They were tasked with solving a notional disaster scenario with their peers: A massive volcano erupted in Germany, leaving a path of destruction for hundreds of miles and a total shutdown of roads, emergency services, electricity, and other city and federal services. Upon conclusion of their training modules in biotechnology engineering, green technology engineering, computer engineering, geological engineering, environmental engineering and robotics, they presented a summary of their proposed solutions for evalua ... WIESBADEN CHAPTER - 08/18/2018
The chapter was re-established in July after a nearly five-year hiatus with a membership kickoff dinner and information session at the Rheinblick Golf Course in Wiesbaden, Germany. More than 25 new and current members met to exchange ideas and information about goals, corporate memberships and the professional community of interest for AFCEA International's and AFCEA Europe's revived chapter. Kevin Kaufman, regional vice president, Central Europe-Southwest, provided an overview of AFCEA. Maj. Gen. Erich Staudacher, GEAF (Ret.), general manager of AFCEA Europe, also offered remarks. The chapter thanks both of these leaders for their personal and professional support. Chapter leadership positions were confirmed. David Pendall will serve as president; Dawn Sverak as secretary; Mike Baumann as treasurer; Kevin Johnson as vice president, community outreach; Felix Zayas as vice president, Young AFCEAN Program; Dan Warschawski as vice president, corporate memberships; and Brian Blank as we ... The newly formed chapter made an immediate impact on the Wiesbaden community. Less than 90 days after its incorporation, Rock Schmidt, chapter president, Rudy Lunasin, chapter secretary, and the other board members presented its first Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Grant in June. A check for $1,000 was presented to Frank Pendzich, faculty adviser to the Wiesbaden High School RoboWarriors. Pendzich is an engineering and technology teacher for the Wiesbaden American High School in Wiesbaden, Germany. He was nominated for his pioneer vision and enthusiasm to teach children in the field of STEM. Pendzich has been instrumental in the Wiesbaden American High School starting and supporting President Obama's STEM initiative by teaching the robotics course since its inception. His passion for teaching engineering and technology is evident with his actions. He believes that STEM is very important and does everything he can to relay this message to interested children. ... WIESBADEN CHAPTER - 04/24/2013
Mentorship was the focus at the initial meeting of the chapter in April. Soldiers and civilians from U.S. Army Europe, the 66th Military Intelligence Brigade, 5th Signal Command and other local units gathered in the Gen. Shalikashvili Mission Command Center to launch the chapter and hear Brig. Gen. Bruce Crawford, USA, 5th Signal commander, share his nearly three decades of career military experience regarding mentoring and preparing for future challenges. "We have to train you to use technology that does not even exist yet to solve problems that we don't even yet know that we have," said Gen. Crawford, after showing a video about the rapid transformation in technology that is evolving on a daily basis. "We've got to develop the capacity to see around corners." A major part of that preparation is guiding future leaders and mentoring fellow soldiers and civilians to expand their horizons and to seek career enhancement opportunities, said the general. "My responsibility is to develop ... READ MORE
