Sharing Success Stories With Agile Scrum Methodology

The chapter and SCRUMDAY Portugal jointly organized the seminar “Agile in the Armed Forces and Public Security” in October at the Institute of Higher Military Studies (IESM). The main objective of this event was to present to the military community success stories in implementing the agile scrum methodology and lean framework to achieve through better management models more competitive and efficient organizations. Dr. Alberto Coehlo, Portuguese National Defense resource director, gave the opening presentation, which highlighted the value of knowledge management and qualification of assets based on the use of innovative tools to improve the effectiveness of organizations and the armed forces. Speakers Thomas Friend and Corey Glickman reinforced the benefits for military decision makers in adopting the agile, scrum and lean methodologies. Rear Adm. Antonio Gameiro Marques, assistant secretary general of the Ministry of National Defense, moderated a panel that included Maj. Gen. Pedro Melo, EMGFA; Capt. Alves Francisco, PON; Professor Dr. Jose Borges, POA; Col. Pedro Salvada, POAF; and Col. Luis Nunes, PONG. Their debate highlighted the importance of using agile, scrum and lean models to optimize processes and improve leadership, including knowledge sharing, so everyone can benefit from the many successful initiatives implemented across the National Defense. Gen. Jose Pinheiro, POAF, chief of staff of the Portuguese Air Force, provided closing remarks that reinforced the benefits to the Air Force that resulted from the correct application of agile concepts in diverse areas such as aircraft maintenance, logistics, internal organization and information systems.
