Education Foundation Hosts Job Shadow Day

The chapter's Education Foundation hosted a Job Shadow Day in March for students of the Robert E. Lee High School IT Career Academy. The Job Shadow Day is an academically motivating activity designed to expose high school students to information technology careers in the real world. This exposure shows students the benefits of learning about information technology in the classroom by demonstrating the lessons' applications outside of the academic environment. Students also connect what they learn in the classroom to real jobs that align with their career paths, ensuring they graduate better prepared for the work force and postsecondary education. The Job Shadow Day started in downtown Montgomery with office tours and orientations from local businesses Array, Indrasoft and ICS. The students then transitioned to Maxwell Gunter Annex for lunch with Herbert Hunter, director of staff, Business Enterprise Systems (BES), and Col. Michael Jiru, USAF, deputy director of BES. Then, students toured the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) work center and split into groups to receive area of interest orientations. The areas of interest included networking with the 26th Network Operations Squadron; help desk support with the Field Assistance Service branch; and the Air Force Systems Networking Division. The Education Foundation thanks Job Shadow Day sponsors BES, Array, Indrasoft, ICS and 1 Sync.
