Chapter Hosts Diversity Webinar on Disability Inclusion

The chapter hosted its January Diversity series webinar featuring Caroline Mailloux, an independent consultant, who advises nonprofits and corporations alike on designing organizations for diversity, belonging and innovation. Mailloux delivered an extraordinarily enlightening presentation and first-hand perspective on disability in the workplace centered on "Spurring Innovation Through Inclusive Leadership." She educated all with an eye-opening history of several of the world's great inventions, which originally emanated from the inventor's need to address a particular disability either personal or familial, such as the typewriter (precursor to braille) telephone, gramophone, and surprisingly, the Internet. She also discussed companies today that are leaders in supporting disabilities, naming Microsoft as the leader in this endeavor. She concluded by responding to questions. She provided a list of critical do's and don'ts when interfacing with disabled persons and suggested that dismantling ableism (discrimination in favor of able-bodied people) is a conscious practice that takes a long time.
