SOFWERX Field Trip Allows High Schoolers Hands-On Experience

In November, the chapter, in partnership with the Hillsborough County Public Schools CyberLaunch Program, coordinated and sponsored field trips for 82 computer science students to explore cyber-related active-duty and civilian career opportunities.

These trips were hosted by the team at Special Operations Forces Works (SOFWERX), an innovation lab for the U.S. Special Operations Command located in Tampa, Florida.

The students were split into small groups so they could get hands-on experience soldering flashlights, learning more about the mission and capabilities of SOFWERX by touring the foundry and data engineering spaces, and candidly interacting with 13 active-duty military volunteers from U.S. Special Operations Command, Joint Support Communications Element and the 6th Communications Squadron. By bringing along equipment and telling of their experiences, the volunteers brought these activities to life.
