A Visit to the Space Smart Factory Highlights Future Space Platforms
This year, the chapter selected the Space Smart Factory of Thales Alenia Space in Rome to offer its members a visit to a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the development and production of future space platforms. During the visit held in June, participants had the opportunity to gain in-depth insight into the "flexible factory" conceived to support multiple application contexts beyond the traditional approach based on production lines dedicated to single products.
The Smart Factory represents a modular and reconfigurable environment designed to effectively address the needs of new space programs.
An innovative production pipeline was presented, aimed at increasing data transmission capacity to ground and enhancing operational autonomy in orbit, while also showcasing new projects and future initiatives for space exploration. The Smart Factory features joint laboratories (Space Joint Lab) designed to foster collaboration with SMEs, startups and university research centres, creating an ecosystem open to innovation.
The facility includes a suite of testing infrastructures among the most advanced in Europe, such as a large thermal chamber for simulating extreme temperature conditions, one of the largest anechoic chambers in Europe for electromagnetic testing, and advanced tools for both virtual and physical testing supported by integrated simulation systems and digital twin technologies.
Innovative solutions for monitoring and controlling production processes were also presented, including "control tower" systems for centralized activity management and automated techniques for satellite integration and testing. During the visit, Thales Alenia Space experts, whom AFCEA wishes to thank for their hospitality, illustrated the Smart Factory's main activities with great expertise and availability, providing participants with a concrete understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with the New Space Economy.
