Advancing Europe's Multidomain Space Vision
The chapter, in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), hosted the conference "Geopolitics, Environment and Security: Technologies, Secure Information, Synergy and Cross-Domain Cooperation" at ESA ESRIN in Frascati, Italy, in May. The event brought together senior representatives from institutions, defense, industry and academia to discuss how space is becoming an essential pillar of security, resilience and technological innovation.
Opening the conference, Ernestina Cianca, chapter vice president and professor at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, highlighted the growing strategic importance of space and the need for integrated, interoperable and resilient space systems. She also reaffirmed AFCEA's longstanding commitment to education and professional development through its support for advanced space-related academic programs.
A keynote address by Simonetta Cheli, ESA director of Earth Observation Programmes, outlined the Agency's expanding contribution to civil security, including Earth observation, border monitoring and critical infrastructure protection, while maintaining its civilian mandate and strengthening interoperability with national space programs.
The conference's central panel, moderated by Frediano Finucci, featured Cheli; Luca Salomone, ASI; Gen. Luca De Martinis, TELEDIFE; Marco Brancati, Leonardo; Enrico Zampolini Faustini, Thales Alenia Space; and Andrea Salpietro, Telespazio. The discussion underscored a shared view that space has become a strategic operational domain supporting defense, environmental monitoring and national resilience. Speakers emphasized that Europe's future competitiveness depends on stronger cooperation among public institutions, industry and research organizations.
Among the key topics, Salomone stressed that future space programs must be conceived within a multidomain framework, citing the dual-use potential of Italy's IRIDE constellation. De Martinis focused on the increasing vulnerability of space assets and the importance of Space Domain Awareness to ensure the protection of critical orbital infrastructure throughout its operational life cycle.
Technical sessions explored the technologies driving the next generation of space capabilities. Thales Alenia Space presented advances in Space Situational Awareness and asset protection, while Federico Bunkheila of Telespazio described the evolution toward autonomous Earth Observation constellations enabled by onboard artificial intelligence, distributed processing and inter-satellite communications. These technologies promise faster response times and greater flexibility in supporting defense and emergency operations.
The program also highlighted the growing role of GeoAI and advanced geomatics. Giovanni Fumia, Octave, demonstrated how digital twins and artificial intelligence are transforming infrastructure management by integrating geospatial data into decision-support systems. Eugenia Finocchiaro, CRISEL, introduced the concept of "Space and Spectral Awareness: From Space Domain Awareness to Space Mission Awareness," illustrating how the integration of orbital intelligence, spectral data analysis and mission-oriented information can enhance situational awareness. Researchers from the University of L'Aquila, led by Donatella Dominici and Nicole Pascucci, presented AI-enabled geomatics for monitoring critical infrastructure, while Giovanni Pugliano, University of Naples Federico II, showcased operational applications of Copernicus Emergency Management Service data for disaster response.
