ALMADA STUDENT CHAPTER - 12/05/2023

In December, the new board members of the chapter and the new faculty advisor of the student club were sworn in at the Portuguese Naval Academy.
Rear Adm. Carlos Rodolfo, PRT N (Ret.), regional vice president, Atlantic Region, and Rear Adm. Mario Simoes Marques, PRT N (Ret.), current president of the Portugal Chapter, swore in Cmdr. Monteiro Marques, PRT N, professor at the Naval Academy, as faculty advisor of the student club, as well as the students of the board and members of the Almada Student Chapter: Cadet EN-AEL Cruz Marcelino, chapter president; ASPOF EN-AEL Catarina Calvao Candeias, chapter vice president; and Cadet EN-AEL Silva Ribeiro, chapter secretary.

ALMADA STUDENT CHAPTER - 09/30/2022
Cadet Beirao Amador, chapter president, and Cadet Mota Gomes answer questions following their presentations during the September meeting. The chapter participated in the sixth annual Student Clubs Meeting in September at the Portuguese Military Institute University (IUM) with representatives from government, industry and academia to share information and opportunities about defense research and development. Participants included Rear Adm. Albuquerque e Sousa, on behalf of the commander of the Naval Academy, Lt. Pessanha Santos, professor and faculty adviser, and other professors, as well as students.

Cadet Beirao Amador, chapter president, presented several club activities. Two student club members' projects were presented by Cadet Mota Gomes and by Cadet Matilde Vieira. One project involved the use of autonomous vessels in the Portuguese Navy in the performance of missions involving different scopes. Another involved the development of the integration of a landing support system for unmanned aerial vehicles on ships.

In May, Rear Adm. Carlos Rodolfo, PRT N (Ret.) (l), regional vice president, Atlantic Region, with Rear Adm. Mario Simoes Marques, commander of the Portuguese Naval Academy (2nd from l), and  Victor Lobo, faculty adviser (far r), welcome the new chapter board members (l-r) Cadet EN-AEL Caldeira Chaves, president; Cadet EN-MEC Joel Martins, first vice president; and Cadet EN-AEL Amaro Vitorino, secretary. In May, the chapter joined the fourth student club meeting at the University of Beira Interior, Covilha, Portugal, hosted by the Covilha Student Club and with the support of AFCEA Portugal. More than 70 participants, including representatives from the Portuguese Ministry of Defense, industry, academia and research centers, exchanged relevant information on the activities of defense research and development (R&D) and presented opportunities for new projects. ALMADA STUDENT CHAPTER - 05/25/2018
Cadet Francisco Santos Baptista, chapter president, delivers a presentation about student activities during the May meeting, which includes three AFCEA student chapters. The chapter participated in the third annual student clubs meeting in May at the Portuguese Naval Academy with representatives from government, industry and academia to share information and opportunities about defense R&D. Participants included Rear Adm. Simoes Marques, commander of the academy, Victor Lobo, professor and faculty adviser, and other professors as well as students. Chapter President Francisco Santos Baptista presented several club activities and R&D projects involving student club members. One project involved the study and design of the instrumentation and telecommunications system for the Vent-Sup project; another involved the development of a prototype application, in LabVIEW, that acquires, senses, analyzes and diagnoses the most common problems in electric induction motors. Another project implements a jamming system onboard an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and another project studies a low-cost system for automatically detecting a person overboard.

Cadet EN-MEC Nuno Lopes Nunes, chapter president, delivers a presentation about the Almada Student Club during the June meeting. In June, the chapter joined the second student clubs meeting in Lisbon, organized by AFCEA Portugal. More than 50 participants, including representatives from government, industry, academia and research centers exchanged relevant information on the activities of defense research and development and presented opportunities for new projects. Professor Victor Lobo, faculty advisor, Lt. Cmdr. Fidalgo Neves and 10 students of the Portuguese Naval Academy represented the Almada Student Chapter. Cadet EN-MEC Nuno Lopes Nunes, chapter president, made a presentation focused on the club activities and research and development projects involving student club members including: UAV Interoperability - External control system for an autopilot; SEACON - Development of a system of release and collection for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV) on submarines; SABUVIS ("Swarm of Biomimetic Underwater Vehicles for Underwater IRS ") - Development of a control algorithm for biomimetic UUV; and VENT-SUP-EN ... In May, the Almada Student Chapter joined an AFCEA Student Clubs Meeting in Lisbon, Portugal, organized by the Portugal Chapter. More then 30 participants, including representatives from government, industry, academia and research centers, exchanged relevant information on the activities of defense research and development and presented opportunities for new projects. The Almada Student Club, based on the Naval Academy, was represented by the president, ASPOF EN-MEC Castro Fernandes, the vice president ASPOF EN-AEL Sampaio Pereira, the faculty adviser, Vitor Lobo, and students CAD-AEL Valerio Rodrigues and CAD-AEL Fernandes Rodrigues. This club brought to this meeting the presentation of two projects: the development project of a sailboat for surveillance missions, presented by ASPOF EN-MEC Castro Fernandes; and the draft study of the operation of a "railgun" system, presented by ASPOF EN-AEL Sampaio Pereira.

Members of the new student club in Portugal are (l-r) Chapter President Castro Fernandes; Second Vice President Sampaio Pereira; Valýrio Rodrigues; Fernandes Rodrigues; Rear Adm. Carlos Rodolfo, PRT NA (Ret.), regional vice president, Atlantic Region and chairman of the Portugal chapter; Faculty Advisor Professor Victor Lobo; and Secretary Rodolfo Carapau. The student chapter was started in 2015. It includes students from the Portuguese Naval Academy and from other university institutions of Almada, namely the faculty of sciences and technology at the New University of Lisbon. Student club activities are focused on the development of sea technologies. The club president is Pedro Castro Fernandes. Tiago Pires and Pedro Sampaio Pereira are first and second vice presidents, and Rodolfo Carapau is the secretary. They are all naval engineer students at the Naval Academy. Professor Victor Lobo, director of the Portuguese Navy Research Center, is the faculty advisor. In March, Rear Adm. Carlos Rodolfo, PRT NA (Ret.), regional vice president, Atlantic Region and chairman of the Portugal chapter, met with the club students at the Naval Academy.
