PORTO STUDENT CHAPTER - 09/30/2022
Jose Borges, Portugal Chapter vice president, moderates the debate with speaker Joao Galante during the videoconference at the September meeting. The chapter participated in the Conference "Research and Development in Defense and Sixth Annual Student Clubs Meeting" in September. This event, held at the Portuguese Military Institute University, was attended by representatives of the armed forces, industry, academia and research and development centers to share information and opportunities on defense projects.

The broadcasted videoconference had the participation of Porto Student Club members and Joao Galante from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, gave a presentation on the Laboratory of Underwater Systems and Technologies with an impact on operating vehicles and tools already developed for real exercises in partnership with the Portuguese Navy.

The presentation was followed by a debate on the topic, moderated by Jose Borges, Portuguese Military Academy professor and Portugal Chapter vice president.

PORTO STUDENT CHAPTER - 07/07/2022
In July, Rear Adm. Carlos Rodolfo, PRT NA (Ret.), regional vice president, Atlantic Region (r), gathers at the Faculty of Engineering of the Porto University with the outgoing club's faculty adviser, Jose Carlos Alves, professor (c), and the new faculty advisor Ricardo Morla, professor. In July, at the Faculty of Engineering of the Porto University (FEUP), Prof. Ricardo Morla, professor, FEUP's DEEC, assumed the role of faculty advisor of the Porto Student Club in Portugal.

Rear Adm. Carlos Rodolfo, PRT NA (Ret.), regional vice president for the Atlantic Region, presented to the outgoing club´s faculty advisor, Jose Carlos Alves, professor, the Educational Foundation Medal for promoting knowledge, leadership and innovation for the future, thanking him for his dedication and guidance of the Porto Student Club since its creation in 2013.

The chapter participated in the Fourth Annual AFCEA Student Clubs Meeting in May at the University of Beira Interior, Covilha, Portugal, hosted by the Covilha Student Club and the support of AFCEA Portugal. The event had the participation of several representatives from government, industry and academia to share information about research and development activities and opportunities. Jose Carlos Alves, club faculty adviser, and six students, represented the chapter, based at the Faculty of Engineering of Porto University (FEUP), Porto, Portugal. During the event, Rear Adm. PORTO STUDENT CHAPTER - 05/25/2018
Faculty of Engineering of Porto University (FEUP) students Andre Ranito (c), Pedro Rodrigues (r) and Diogo Moreira deliver a presentation at the May student clubs meeting at the Portuguese Naval Academy. The chapter participated in the third annual AFCEA student clubs meeting in May at the Portuguese Naval Academy with representatives from government, industry and academia to share information about R&D activities and opportunities. Based at the Faculty of Engineering of Porto University (FEUP), the student chapter was represented at the meeting by Jose Carlos Alves, faculty adviser and professor, Andre Ranito, chapter president, and students Diogo Moreira, Pedro Rodrigues and Nuno Neto. Ranito spoke about the chapters activities and his involvement in the project "Light Detection and Ranging System Using MEMS Mirrors." Rodrigues presented his project "Improving the Performance of Vulnerability Scanners in Security Operation Centers," and Moreira presented his working project "Switched Antenna Array for Maritime Communications." PORTO STUDENT CHAPTER - 06/09/2017

In June, the chapter participated in the second AFCEA student clubs meeting in Lisbon, Portugal. The Porto Student Chapter is located in the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), in the North of Portugal. Due to the academic schedule, it was not possible for the members to be physically present, but the students prepared a video with a presentation that was displayed during the meeting. The presentation, made by Andre Ranito, Nuno Fernandes, Diogo Moreira and Jane Fraser, focused on the World Robotic Sailing Championship (WRSC 2016) held in Viana do Castelo, Portugal. The chapter was very active in the organization of the event. The goal was to highlight the importance of the implementation of a remote monitoring system of sailboats in competition and the automation of the process of classification of various competitions.

Also joining the meeting are professor and faculty adviser José Carlos Alves (2nd from r) and students (l-r, back row) Joao Costa, Carlos Silva, Nuno Fernandes, Andre Ranito and Jose Valente, club president. In May, the chapter joined an AFCEA Student Clubs Meeting in Lisbon, Portugal, organized by the Portugal Chapter. More than 30 participants, including representatives from government, industry, academia and research centers, exchanged relevant information on the activities of defense research and development and presented opportunities for new projects. The Porto Student Club, based at the Faculty of Engineering of Porto University (FEUP), was represented by the club's president, José Valente, students Nuno Fernandes, André Ranito, Joao Costa and Carlos Silva, under the coordination of faculty adviser José Carlos Alves. Valente spoke about the club's activities with robotic systems and unmanned aerial systems and how they have enhanced the students' interest in technological applications in defense and security. PORTO STUDENT CHAPTER - 10/19/2015
Jose Valente delivers a presentation at the AFCEA European Student Conference in Berlin last October. With the support of the AFCEA Educational Foundation and Portugal chapter, Jose Valente of the Porto Student Club participated in the 7th AFCEA European Student Conference, organized by AFCEA Europe, which took place in Berlin last October. At the conference, Valente presented an article titled "Coastal surveillance with autonomous sailing vessels." The work demonstrated the capability of the FASt sailboat, a 2.5 m LOA (length overall) autonomous sailing boat developed in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Porto, Portugal, to carry out patrol missions of long duration. Valente received an award for the second best oral presentation and for the best poster at the event. Valente and Professor Jose Carlos Alves, club faculty advisor, had the opportunity to establish contacts with other international attendees from different areas of knowledge, boosting future cooperation between academic research centers.

PORTO STUDENT CHAPTER - 09/13/2014
The Portuguese team competing in the World Robotic Sailing Championships 2014 in September includes (l-r): Nuno Cruz , faculty; José Valente, student;, Luis Perestrelo, student; and José Carlos Alves, faculty adviser of the student chapter. A team of professors of the University of Porto/INESC TEC and students from the student chapter participated in the seventh World Robotic Sailing Championships/International Robotic Sailing Conference that took place in Galway, Ireland, in September. This annual event joins the international community working in various scientific and technologic subjects related to the development and operation of autonomous surface vehicles powered by the wind. This relatively new type of robotic vessel exhibits a huge potential for long-term missions at sea for a wide range of applications such as scientific sampling of ocean data or marine surveillance with above the surface or underwater sensing devices. The Portuguese team entered the event with two robotic autonomous sailboats developed by the students at the University of Porto, in the scope of the student chapter's activities. PORTO STUDENT CHAPTER - 07/31/2014
In July, Rear Adm. Carlos Rodolfo, PRT NA (Ret.) (c), Portugal Chapter president, gathers at the Faculty of Engineering of the Porto University with Jose Carlos Alves (l), faculty adviser for the student club, and Jose Valente, who assumed the role of student club president. In July, Jose Valente assumed the role of president of the Porto Student Club. Rear Adm. Carlos Rodolfo, PRT NA (Ret.), Portugal Chapter president, gathered at the Faculty of Engineering of the Porto University (FEUP) with Valente and the club's faculty adviser, professor Jose Carlos Alves. The club informed Adm. Rodolfo that it plans to continue its activities of improving a robotic sailboat and will participate in the World Sailing Championship 2014 held Sept. 8-13 in Galway, Ireland.

In 2013, an AFCEA student club was founded in Oporto, a city in Northern Portugal; it was the first club established in the country. In December, Rear Adm. Carlos Rodolfo, PON (Ret.), Portugal Chapter president, gathered at the Faculty of Engineering of the Porto University (FEUP) with Henrique Cabral, the president of the AFCEA Porto Student Club, and with other members of the club in the presence of professor Jose Carlos Alves, faculty adviser. The president of the Student Club reported the interest demonstrated by other students in becoming members and informed that future activities will focus mainly on the development project of the robotic sailboat to participate at the next international competition.
