COVILHA STUDENT CHAPTER - 09/30/2022
The chapter participated in the sixth annual student clubs meeting in September at the Portuguese Military Institute University (IUM) with representatives from government, industry and academia to share information and opportunities about defense research and development. Participants included Jorge Reis Silva, professor and faculty adviser, and other professors as well as students.
The student chapters in Portugal presented their research and development projects, followed by a debate moderated by Jose Borges, Portuguese Military Academy professor and Portugal Chapter vice president.

COVILHA STUDENT CHAPTER - 05/31/2019
The chapter organized the fourth annual student clubs meeting in May at the University of Beira Interior (UBI), in Covilha, Portugal, to share research and development activities and opportunities with representatives from government, industry and academia. The conference, opened by Antonio Fidalgo, university rector, was focused on Cybersecurity Aeronautics, Space and Defense. Rear Adm. Carlos Rodolfo, PRT NA (Ret.), regional vice president, Atlantic Region, and chairman, Portugal Chapter, presented Jorge Reis Silva, UBI professor and club faculty advisor, who represented the chapter along with students Tiago Sanches, chapter president; Alexandre Nunes, second vice president; and Pedro Carneiro, secretary. COVILHA STUDENT CHAPTER - 05/25/2018
The chapter attended the third annual student clubs meeting in May at the Portuguese Naval Academy to share R&D activities and opportunities with representatives from government, industry and academia. The chapter was represented at the meeting by Jorge Reis Silva, professor, University of Beira Interior (UBI) and adviser, and students Tiago Sanches, Joao Santos and Alexandre Nunes. Students presented their work in the fields of aeronautics, computer science and electromechanical engineering. Sanches presented his working project, "Optimal Robust Trajectory Control of Atmospheric Flights," a time-constrained waypoint navigation algorithm for improved flight planning and operating both unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and manned aircraft. His work could lead to improved stand-alone capabilities for UAVs and predictability for air traffic control services, reducing airport traffic congestion and arrival delays and improving aviation safety. COVILHA STUDENT CHAPTER - 06/09/2017
The chapter joined the second AFCEA student clubs meeting in June in Lisbon, Portugal. In the meeting the Covilha Student Chapter, located at the University of Beira Interior, was represented by professor Jorge Reis Silva, faculty adviser, and the chapter's new board. Luis Trindade, chapter president, made a presentation focused on the activities of chapter members. It included, in particular, the following: the assessment of infrastructure and complex systems; a robot with the ability to chase aircraft; the project titled "Multifunctional Air Transport System," consisting of a hybrid airship that can be used for air surveillance of civilian and military areas; the "Olharapo," an aircraft used as a test vehicle for the study of a telescoping wing; a solar unmanned aerial vehicle, which uses photovoltaic cells as an energy source; and the Shell Eco Marathon project, that allowed the development of an innovative electric motor for an ecologic prototype car.

COVILHA STUDENT CHAPTER - 03/14/2017
In March, Rear Adm. Carlos Rodolfo, PRT N (Ret.), regional vice president, Atlantic Region, visited the Department of Aerospace Sciences (DCA) of the University of Beira Interior in Covilha, Portugal. Adm. Rodolfo gathered with the club's faculty adviser, Professor Jorge Reis Silva and students interested in joining AFCEA's Covilha Student Club. Adm. Rodolfo, accompanied by Professor Francisco Brojo, president of DCA, and Professor Silva visited the laboratories, where some students presented their work on improving Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS).

COVILHA STUDENT CHAPTER - 05/30/2016
In May, the chapter joined an AFCEA Student Clubs Meeting in Lisbon, Portugal, organized by the Portugal Chapter. This event was attended by representatives from government, industry, academia and research centers. Participants shared relevant information on the activities of defense research and development as well as new projects to enhance recruitment and other opportunities. The Covilha Student Club, based at the University of Beira Interior (UBI), was represented by Pedro Santos, club president, Jorge Reis Silva, faculty adviser and student Diogo Sousa. Santos gave a presentation about the club, focusing on its activities and ongoing projects. The club introduced the Variable-Span Wing, a morphing wing capable of changing span in flight. Moreover, two remotely piloted aircraft systems developed at UBI were presented, highlighting their configurations and capabilities.

COVILHA STUDENT CHAPTER - 12/11/2014
The chapter held a ceremony for the opening of the 2014-15 academic year in December at the aerospace sciences department of the University of Beira Interior, Covilha, Portugal. Several entities were represented in the ceremony, including AFCEA Portugal, NAV Portugal, the Portuguese Air Force, the Portuguese Order of Engineers, Instituto Superior Técnico and Tecmic. New students in aeronautical engineering were welcomed, and Rear Adm. Mario Durao, PRT NA (Ret.), chapter president, along with Fernando Moreira, Tecmic's chairman of the board, honored Diogo Sousa with the AFCEA Portugal Student Award. The award recognizes the highest-ranked student in the previous year (licentiate's degree). Pedro Albuqerque, Ph.D. student and first vice president of the Covilha Student Club, promoted the group's activities and invited new members to the club.

COVILHA STUDENT CHAPTER - 03/24/2014
With the support of the AFCEA Educational Foundation, Portuguese students Carlos Velosa and Joao Morgado of the Covilha Student Club participated in the 6th AFCEA European Student Conference, organized by AFCEA Europe, which took place at the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technologies of the University Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania, in March. At that conference, Morgado presented an article titled "The New Software for Propeller Design and Analysis" on the development of a new numeric code that enables the conceptual project of propellers and evaluates its performance for different operating systems. The feature article was related to his Ph.D. thesis work at the Department of Aerospace Sciences, University of Beira Interior, in Portugal. COVILHA STUDENT CHAPTER - 12/16/2013
The president and chief executive officer of AFCEA International approved the foundation of a student club at the University of Beira Interior (UBI) in Covilha, a city in eastern Portugal. The club president is Pedro Santos, the first vice president is Pedro Albuquerque and the secretary is Joao Morgado, students at the Department of Aerospace Sciences (DCA) of UBI. Professor Jorge Reis Silva is the faculty adviser. In December, during the opening ceremony of the UBI/DCA academic year 2013-2014, Morgado spoke about the creation of the club and presented the activities planned for 2014. Rear Adm. Carlos Rodolfo, PRT NA (Ret.), president of the Portugal Chapter, pointed out that that club membership will provide opportunities for students to communicate with the academic and scientific community around the world, to participate actively at seminars, symposia, courses and member networking, and to engage in scientific projects, obtain grants and scholarships.
