OKINAWA CHAPTER - 10/22/2015
The chapter held its fourth annual TechNet Day in October. With the theme of "Cloud-Based Unified Communications," the event attracted 19 vendors, corporate sponsors and nearly 250 individual and group attendees throughout the day. Key features of the event included a keynote speaker, the presentation of three $1,000 STEM Teacher Scholarship Awards and 10 new chapter Life Memberships, vendor exhibits and two buffet meals (breakfast sponsored by FireEye and lunch sponsored by IronBow Technologies). The chapter thanks AFCEA International's Member and Chapter Services team and the chapter's two corporate members, American Engineering Corporation and GL BroadBand. The chapter also celebrated its 41st year since being chartered on October 21, 1974.

OKINAWA CHAPTER - 12/15/2014
The chapter hosted a guided tour in December of the OIST Graduate University, an internationally distinguished institution for education and research in science and technology. The university features a single interdisciplinary program and a five-year integrated doctoral program that recruits only about 40 students per year worldwide. One of the main highlights of this professional development event is the presentation of the university's information technology department, supercomputer and state-of-the-art data center. Chief information officer Tim Dyce is especially knowledgeable about information technology support to researchers and faculty, data center capability and its integrated technologies as well as HVAC efficiencies.

OKINAWA CHAPTER - 10/23/2014
The chapter held its 3rd Annual TechNet Day in October. This year's theme was Joint Information Environment (JIE) and attracted 18 participating vendors, corporate sponsors and nearly 300 attendees throughout the day. Key features of the event included a keynote speaker, STEM Teacher Scholarship presentations, a joint discussion panel, vendor presentations and two buffet meals (breakfast sponsored by Infoblox and lunch sponsored by World Wide Technology Inc.). The chapter gives special thanks to AFCEA International's Member and Chapter Services team for their support.

Master Gunnery Sgt. Arthur Allen III, USMC, chapter president, demonstrates the Signal Magazine iPad App to the audience during the chapter's July general membership meeting. Allen is the communications chief, III Marine Expeditionary Force G-6, and is the senior enlisted communicator across all Marine forces in Japan.

OKINAWA CHAPTER - 11/07/2013
In November, the chapter held its monthly luncheon at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) Graduate University. OIST conducts internationally distinguished education and research in science and technology. The university features single interdisciplinary graduate and 5-year integrated doctoral programs (all taught in the English language only). Academic and research fields include molecular, cell and developmental biology, neurosciences, environmental and ecological sciences, mathematical and computational sciences and physics and chemistry. OIST only recruits 20 students per year worldwide and has a total of 569 faculty, researchers (including Nobel Prize winners) and administrators. The chapter took a guided tour of the research laboratories, academics areas and the Information Technology Department's state-of-the-art data center and super computer in order to gain insight into some information technology industry best practices.

The chapter's 2nd Annual TechNet was held in September. It included keynote speaker Col. Scott F. Stebbins, USMC, commanding officer, Marine Air Control Group 18. The event also featured a multitude of corporate vendors exhibits, demonstrations and a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) scholarship award presentation to Jeanene Golden, a K-5 gifted education teacher.

OKINAWA CHAPTER - 08/05/2010
In August, Michael Swanson, technical manager, Information Technology Department, U.S. Naval Hospital, Okinawa, spoke with members of the chapter on the chronological development of information technology and its direct impact on Navy medicine on Okinawa from 1994 to present day. Attendees included Lt. Col. Jason Sutton, chapter vice president, along with representatives from government and military agencies, such as the Department of Defense Dependents Schools, G-6 Marine Communications, 18th Communications Squadron and the 58th Signal Battalion, and private industry representatives such as Tribalco, Anixter, Summit Industrial Group, Spearpoint, Team EITC, American Engineering and Iron Bow. Topics highlighted during the event included systems management, networks, desktop and account management, telephony, and pager and radio communication. At the end of the briefing, Swanson received a chapter coin from Col. Sutton.

OKINAWA CHAPTER - 05/06/2010
Approximately 60 current and new members of the chapter convened in May for a general membership meeting. Lt. Col. William J. Deagan, USA, newly elected chapter president; Lt. Col. Jason K. Sutton, USAF, chapter vice president; and other officers were introduced by Gordon Bolton, chapter secretary. The highlight of the luncheon was the presentation of a $1,000 scholarship from the seventh annual AFCEA International Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Program to Jennifer Cooper of Lester Middle School. Representatives from CISCO Systems and Symantec Corporation also presented technical demonstrations during the luncheon.

In February, the chapter presented the 2008 AFCEA Science Teacher Award to Susan Hefner. The award will help with the cost of science supplies for Hefner's elementary school classes. Guest speaker Eric Petersen, major account manager, Polycom, presented a lecture titled "Unified Communications and Video Teleconferencing Challenges for the Defense Department and Industry." He discussed the history of videoconferencing and how the industry and military have overcome challenges to produce one of the most effective means of distance communication.

In October, the chapter hosted the Enhance (it) Pacific Theater 2008 Technology Expo at Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan. Sponsored by the Communications Supply Corporation, Enhance (it) featured industry leaders educating chapter members and guests on new technologies that are being designed to better use information technology real estate, increase network speeds, decrease down time, increase power efficiency and secure property and networks against internal and external threats. The expo was well attended, and the chapter plans to host more of these events.

The U.S. Forces Japan Director of C4 Systems, Capt. Sandra Buckles (USN), joined the chapter for the April 2007 luncheon. Speaking at the monthly meeting, Capt. Buckles discussed various aspects of command, control, communications and computers, and she elaborated on the importance of being able to communicate with coalition partners and contractors that support the military.

Communicators from all over the beautiful island of Okinawa came together on 25 October 2006, for another productive chapter luncheon. Representatives from all military services and several corporations networked together and heard Col. Dave Hagopian discuss initiatives at the III Marine Expeditionary Force, creativity in the workplace, and core leadership principles.
