Reporting Data Loss: Tough Choices, One Answer

Reporting Data Loss: Tough Choices, One Answer
When military data is lost, stolen or compromised, the potential dangers are obvious. Lost personal data can lead to identity theft, lost operational data can lead to mission cancellation or failure and lost technical data can lead to other compromised systems and even further damage. While loss of data is bad enough, sometimes the loss is not mitigated in a timely fashion. When this happens, it is often not because of a stealthy hacker or a missing hardware audit. It is because somebody did not report the incident out a fear of potential personal consequences. We need to change that mindset. Not accepting responsibility and warning others of a network or data breach can put missions and lives at risk.

CREATIVE SOURCE OF FUNDING FOR YOUR COMPANY'S PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

CREATIVE SOURCE OF FUNDING FOR YOUR COMPANY'S PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
Money may be available for your company's IC-specific product development, but not as a hand-out, more of a collaborative endeavor, sponsored by your friendly Department of Defense. Have you ever considered the Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program that the federal government runs? Below is an introduction to SBIR, and I found this to be very helpful. Keep in mind that the DoD drives approximately 70% to 80% of the intelligence community's mission. So, the IC connection is via the DoD-specific SBIR segments. This money will be spent on innovation; that is the law; so, if you believe your innovation is truly unique, it's worth a look.

PERSPECTIVES ON CYBER SECURITY BILL

BUDGET REALITIES

BUDGET REALITIES
Thanks to many of you for noticing that back in February after losing the Chief of Station debate followed by the FLT 253 failed Christmas Bombing event I forecasted in this blog that Denny Blair would be out as DNI before the 4th of July. However, in May I fearlessly, but incorrectly, advised this audience to expect Secretary Gates to have some pointed comments in his Baker Award acceptance speech about the amount of money the nation is spending on large intelligence projects/programs as budgets flatten and the economy continues to struggle. Instead, the SecDef demurred with remarks of gratitude that where brief, sincere and gracious but substantively vapid. Of course, Denny Blair being asked to resign the day before the Baker Dinner may have caused the Secretary to demur from controversial comments that would have added to the news cycle.

Fount of Hidden Assessment Knowledge Flows

Fount of Hidden Assessment Knowledge Flows
Rarely does a week go by that doesn't include a military-sponsored exercise, experiment or demonstration. As participants ready for the event, excitement mounts. During the event, there don’t seem to be enough hours in a day to accomplish tasks as troops immerse themselves in the job at hand and the days fly by all too quickly. Enter the Joint Systems Integration Center (JSIC). Rather than sponsor its own exercises, experiments or demonstrations, JSIC members become flies on the walls of event sites around the world and create Joint Systems Baseline Assessments (JSBAs).

HOW FAST IS 3G AND WHAT IS 3.5G AND WHEN WILL 4G REALLY BE HERE?

HOW FAST IS 3G AND WHAT IS 3.5G AND WHEN WILL 4G REALLY BE HERE?
Most enterprise CTOs are very interested in the "cloud" and ways to tap into cloud-based resources. An interesting aspect of this discussion has been how to access the cloud while on the move. Today's cellular networks support that access today, and future enhancements are making that support even better and much much faster.
