SEOUL CHAPTER - 04/24/2017
The chapter will host TechNet Korea 2017, with the theme "Interoperability: Success to Operations." The expo will be held April 24-28 at the War Memorial of Korea Museum Wedding Hall. Nearly 100 exhibitors and speakers from the United States and South Korea will address challenges facing the national defense community and possible solutions. Most events are free to the public. The chapter has prepared a full brief for participants and visitors. There also will be information technology and technology training that may apply toward continuing education credits.

In September, the chapter appointed Col. Karlton D. Johnson, USAF, assistant chief of staff /J-6 and chief information officer, United States Forces Korea, as the new chapter president. In September, the chapter appointed Col. Karlton D. Johnson, USAF, as the new chapter president. Col. Johnson serves as the assistant chief of staff /J-6 and chief information officer for the United States Forces Korea. Shortly after his arrival in Korea in July 2011, the colonel expressed his desire to help revitalize the chapter. He met with chapter board members to learn about AFCEA in Korea and to discuss both his history with AFCEA and his vision for his assignment in the country. Col. Johnson is a lifetime AFCEA member, and in 1989, he received the AFCEA Award for Excellence as a new lieutenant. He has been published in SIGNAL Magazine with an article in 2002 titled “Rethinking Joint Information Operations,” along with an article in Joint Forces Quarterly titled “Unity of Effort in Joint Information Operations.” In 2005, Computerworld Laureate Magazine published his article, “Innovation for the Battlefield: Communications and Information Systems Support to the Warfighter.”

In June, Col. Daniel J. Birrenkott, USAF (l), chapter president, and Maj. Gen. Larry Wells, USAF (r), deputy chief of staff, U.S. Forces Korea, present scholarships to Melody Horbach, Jason Lamb (3rd from l) and Jakob Alejandre. In June, the chapter hosted a lunch at the Hartell House on U.S. Army Garrison-Yongsan. Maj. Gen. Larry Wells, USAF, deputy chief of staff, U.S. Forces Korea, addressed the audience with a humorous, highly motivational and informative presentation titled, “Air Force Warfighters' Perspective on C4ISR.” The general expressed the current and future command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance needs of U.S. forces in Korea. In addition, the chapter presented $1,000 scholarships to three local high school students: Jason Lamb, Seoul American High School (Defense Department Dependents Schools); Melody Horbach, Osan American High School (Defense Department Dependents Schools); and Jakob Alejandre, Seoul Foreign School (International). SEOUL CHAPTER - 05/18/2011
Dave Marcus, director of security research of McAfee Labs, addresses the chapter in May. In May, the chapter hosted a lunch during the Signal Corps Regimental Association's 2011 Korea LandWarNet Training Conference at the Capital Hotel in Seoul. Dave Marcus, director of security research of McAfee Labs, addressed the audience with one of the most dynamic and informative presentations of the year. His presentation to an enthusiastic crowd of members and conference attendees perfectly complemented the conference theme of Transition in North East Asia: Implementing the Enterprise to Enhance Warfighting and Cyber Operations. Marcus focused his lively, interactive discussion on “The Downside of Social Media,” and he demonstrated to the crowd how he could collect very personal information on just about anyone in less than 20 minutes; 8 minutes on average. He emphasized that social media is a conversation that is permanent, kept in national archives and social media host databases. Bradford, director of Enterprise Systems Technology Activity, senior technical director/chief engineer, Network Enterprise Technology Command (NETCOM)/9th Signal Corps (Army), for being the featured speaker at the chapter's luncheon in April. Seoul Chapter members and guests were honored to have Daniel Q. Bradford, director of Enterprise Systems Technology Activity, senior technical director/chief engineer, Network Enterprise Technology Command (NETCOM)/9th Signal Corps (Army), as the featured guest speaker during the April luncheon, which was held in conjunction with the Korea LandWarNet training conference. Mr. Bradford explained LandWarNet is a means for soldiers, leaders and units to conduct information-enabled joint warfighting and supporting operations. He also discussed the Army's information technology challenges and the ongoing developments in its enterprise network. Mr. Bradford concluded his presentation by emphasizing the goal of enterprise network is to develop one network that can provide centralized services, enable network-dependent expeditionary capabilities and provide significant improvement in the computer network defense posture.

Seoul Chapter President Nathan Colodney presentes an AFCEA crystal paperweight to Cindy E. Moran, Defense Information Systems Agency, in appreciation for her support. Members and guests of the chapter attended a luncheon in September with Cindy E. Moran, chief, Center for Network Services, Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), as the featured speaker. To kick off her presentation, Moran presented a video titled "Shift Happens" to draw attention to how today's technological and social changes are influencing changes in DISA's business practices. DISA is developing new approaches to deal with its cost recovery challenges, Moran stated. And as budgetary pressures have constrained funding throughout the U.S. Defense Department, DISA is offering incentives to its customers while still managing to keep costs down, she added. Moran also talked about the Defense Information System Network (DISN) and her agency's goal to provide a totally converged and seamless network transport architecture that is secure and interoperable. Guest speaker Lt. Gen. Stephen G. Wood, USAF, addresses the attendees at the chapter's scholarship awards luncheon in May. In May the chapter held its Scholarship Awards luncheon in May and featured guest speaker Lt. Gen. Stephen G. Wood, USAF, deputy commander, United Nations Command; deputy commander, U.S. Forces Korea; commander, Air Component Command, Republic of Korea and U.S. Combined Forces Command; and Commander, 7th Air Force. Prior to presenting the scholarship awards to this year's recipients, Gen. Wood thanked AFCEA and the chapter's corporate members for their continued support and commitment to the United States Forces Korea (USFK) community, and for helping with local interests. In his speech, Gen. Wood stated, "To advance technology, we need to begin with our youth." He told the student scholarship awardees that an AFCEA scholarship is one way to kick start a great future. The 2007 Seoul Chapter's scholarship awardees are Alexander Ahn, Chad Ahn, Hana Church, Sara Jones, Frances Kim and Kelly Schulte.

SEOUL CHAPTER - 04/11/2007
Trinidad F. Capelo (l), chapter vice president for membership, hosted the golf tournament held in April at the Sungnam Golf Course. The golf tournament was held as part of the chapter's scholarship fundraising efforts. Capelo joined corporate sponsors who attended the event: Max OBrien, Booz Allen Hamilton; Robert Bradshaw, Northrop Grumman Defense Mission Systems; David Kwon, Dell; and Dr. Ned Stoll, General Dynamics IT. In April the chapter and the Signal Corps Regimental Association joined to hold a golf tournament. The event raised over $5,000 for the Seoul Chapter's 2007 scholarship and grant program benefiting deserving students in the community. This year's higher education scholarship awards recipients will be recognized at the Scholarship Awards Luncheon in May. The corporate sponsors that supported the fundraising effort include Silver Sponsors Booz Allen Hamilton and General Dynamics IT, and Bronze Sponsors CACI, Dell and Northrop Grumman Defense Mission Systems. Several teams comprising of U.S. personnel and Republic of Korea nationals participated in the event.

Nathan Colodney, chapter president (l), presents Lt. Gen. Charles Croom, USAF, with an AFCEA crystal paperweight to thank him for speaking at the chapter's technical forum luncheon in March. Lt. Gen. Charles E. Croom, Jr., USAF, director, Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) and commander for the Joint Task Force-Global Network Operations (JTF-GNO), was the featured speaker at the March luncheon. Gen. Croom gave an overview of some of DISA's strategic functions such as providing interoperable command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (C4I) systems to the White House, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and various Defense Department organizations. Gen. Croom spoke about DISA's "five point" strategy: delivering critical information to the warfighter, providing best value to customers, bringing power to the tactical edge, increasing the speed of service and capability acquisition and delivery, and providing operational excellence. He outlined DISA's goals for information assurance and the basic tools used to achieve them. Gen. Croom concluded his presentation by holding a brief question and answer session with attendees.

Chapter board members gather with the chapter's corporate members during an appreciation luncheon held in February. Nathan Colodney, chapter president for Seoul, hosted a luncheon in February at the Dragon Hill Lodge in Yongsan Garrison in appreciation for the chapter's corporate members. Colodney expressed his goal of forming a mutual relationship between corporate and chapter members; he also outlined upcoming chapter events and solicited feedback on achieving objectives. Outgoing Seoul Chapter president Col. Greg Edwards, USAF, inducts newly elected chapter president Nathan Colodney in February. The Seoul Chapter held a luncheon in February to recognize and honor 2006-2007 chapter officers. Outgoing chapter president Col. Greg Edwards, USAF, United States Forces Korea assistant chief of staff, Command, Control, Communications, and Computer Systems (USFK J6), spoke briefly about the chapter's achievements over the past year. Highlights included the launch of the chapter's web site, intended to make AFCEA a better platform for Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence Systems (C4I) information sharing throughout the Korean peninsula; the scholarship awards program benefiting the Department of Defense Dependents Schools in Korea, and successfully fostering relations with the local Korean C4I community. Vice Adm. Nancy E. Brown, USN, director for command, control, communications and computer systems (C4) systems/J-6, the Joint Staff, was the guest speaker at the Seoul Chapter's luncheon in November. Adm. Brown spoke about the Joint Chiefs of Staff network-centric operations campaign plan. She explained that the vision of the Defense Department J-6 is to bring true combat capability to the warfighter via joint network-centric operations (JNO). JNO is a combat multiplier that leads to an integrated global network. This network enables sharing of the right information at the right time, stated Adm. Brown.

After her briefing, Adm. Brown along with Seoul chapter president and U. S. Forces Korea (USFK) assistant chief of staff, J-6, Col. Seoul chapter members and guests received a briefing on network-centric warfare from Chapter President and U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) assistant chief of staff/J-6, Col. Greg Edwards, USAF, during September's luncheon in Yongsan. Col. Edwards presented a lecture titled "Beyond Systems: Network Integration into the Operational Framework of our Forces," and described USFK's network-centric warfare vision. Following the colonel's presentation, Lt. Gen. Alonzo E. Short Jr., USA (Ret.), spoke. Lt. Gen. Short is president and chief operating officer of Raytheon Company Houston Associates, Inc. He also is a former director of Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) and former commander of US Army Signal Corps Information Systems Command. The general presented a brief on partnering with DISA and DISA's strategic vision.

“Land of the Morning Calm” Chapter President, Col Greg Edwards (Air Force), presents Mr Steve Ewart, Communications Supply Corporation, an AFCEA crystal paperweight to thank him for his support during the Seoul Chapter's July Technical Forum Luncheon. The Seoul Chapter's luncheon held in July commenced with a brief presentation by the featured speaker, Mr. Steve Ewart, Director of Government Solutions, Communications Supply Corporation. Following the presentation, Chapter President Col Greg Edwards (Air Force) gave special recognition to the chapter's newest corporate sponsor, Korea Telecom (KT), represented by Ms Hoo Sun Lee, Vice President of Operations. Col Edwards also welcomed TELUS International Korea who has recently partnered with KT PowerTel to offer Blackberry services on the peninsula. At the conclusion of the meeting, Col Edwards affirmed that the chapter is staying attuned to its goals. He briefly spoke about the chapter's recent awards submissions, upcoming elections for the Board of Directors positions, and future chapter events. He presented a lifetime membership award to Mr Stephen E. Brown, BAE Systems Information Technology, and thanked the featured speaker and all the corporate sponsors for their support.
