AUGUSTA-FORT GORDON CHAPTER - 06/28/2023
In June, Alyssa Bagby receives one of the 12 scholarships virtually presented by the chapter. Other winners not pictured were Alya Akhtar, Nicholas Plantamura, Greer Worley, Jace Wrightson, Jessica Lawson, Trista Brown, Sophia Coleman, Song Ting Tang, Emery Doss, Ansley Pacheco and Nika Shekastehband. At the chapter's June event, 12 students from the Augusta-Fort Gordon areas received scholarships. Two recipients received the Chestnut Awards, while the remaining 10 received the chapter's general scholarship awards.

Leslie Gorman, USA, director, U.S. Army Cyber Command, presented the chapter with an overview of offensive cyber operations versus defensive cyber operations.

Crystal Davis MacDowell is awarded the Dr. Sandra Carraway Award for her outstanding service as a standout teacher at Greenbrier High School. In March, Crystal Davis MacDowell, a teacher from Greenbrier High School, Evans, Georgia, was the recipient of the prestigious Dr. Sandra Carraway Award presented by the chapter.

AUGUSTA-FORT GORDON CHAPTER - 03/15/2023
Javen McCaster, Bayvale Elementary, receives a STEAM grant while standing with Justine McDonald (l), Vanessa Darling, Bayvale principal (c), and Melissa Johnson (r). In March, the chapter presented several local science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) teachers with grants to aid in advancing their curriculum. Recipients included Javen McCaster of Bayvale Elementary, Amy Edwards of Hillville Christian Academy and David Kassner of Lakeside High School.

AUGUSTA-FORT GORDON CHAPTER - 03/15/2023
In March, Chuck Keller, presents a $5,000 check to send more than 150 students to CyberPartriot camps in 2023. Receiving the donation are Tom Clark (l) and Adanet Adon, both from the CSRA Alliance. In March, the chapter made a large donation to support the CSRA Alliance with funds to send more than 150 students (from kindergarten to 11th grade) to CyberPatriot summer camps in 2023 for free.

AUGUSTA-FORT GORDON CHAPTER - 06/24/2020
At the June event, Ben Chestnut, creator of the Chestnut Scholarship, explains why giving back to the chapter means so much to him.  In June, the chapter hosted its first virtual awards ceremony. Because of state and local COVID-19 gathering restrictions, the chapter presented six awards via digital media. The two Chestnut Scholarship Award recipients were Kelly Tran and Kamora Johnson. The four additional STEM scholarship recipients were Anna Burnett, Jasmine Lee, Jack Shepherd and Caitrin Blankenship.

AUGUSTA-FORT GORDON CHAPTER - 07/23/2019
At the July event, Mike Nowatkowski, associate professor, School of Computer and Cyber Sciences at Augusta University, speaks to the audience about the future of a STEM degree. The chapter held its annual scholarship award ceremony in conjunction with their July monthly Lunch and Learn. The event featured a guest speaker from Augusta University, and eight recipients each received a $2,000 scholarship award from the chapter.

At the April event, Col. Sly Cotton, USA (Ret.), chapter president, receives a certificate of appreciation for AFCEA's support of this much anticipated project as Kelly Knitter looks on.   In April, the chapter, along with America's Adopt-a-Soldier, co-sponsored the restoration effort and dedication of the new Augusta Airport military family hospitality suite. The new suite was dedicated in memory of Maj. Gen. Harry Greene, USA.

Nine teachers from the Central Savannah River Association (CSRA) area received STEM teaching tool grants to assist with furthering their classroom projects at the chapter's January meeting.

Nine local teachers received chapter grants in January to aid in effective STEM education and to assist with purchasing materials for experiments and classroom activities. This year, the chapter has provided nearly $6,715 in grants.

Col. Paul Stanton, USA, commander, Cyber Protection Brigade, leads a discussion about cyber operational requirements at January's first AFCEA International Cyber Education, Research and Training Symposium (CERTS). The chapter supported AFCEA International's first Cyber Education, Research and Training Symposium (CERTS) in January in Augusta, Georgia. The event provided information to support cyber educators, trainers and members of the workforce from the classroom to the workplace. The topics, crucial in practice and operational missions, covered subjects ranging from curriculum through certification, including tools and techniques.

AUGUSTA-FORT GORDON CHAPTER - 04/25/2017
At the April forum, Eric Eshelman, vice president of sales and marketing for Cape Augusta Digital Properties, discusses business goals, the status of the site and the vision of how it plans to work with the community. The chapter hosted a forum in April for the AFCEA community to meet the newest member of the regional economic development initiative known as the Fort Gordon Cyber District. Cape Augusta Digital Properties is redeveloping a historic property into a data center and technology park. At the event, various individuals involved with the project discussed its status and took questions from the audience.

Cyber analyst David Diggs of IntelliGenesis LLC, with offices in Maryland and Georgia, presented at the chapter's February Lunch and Learn. The session offered an in-depth look at how to protect networks and systems from emerging cyberthreats.

AUGUSTA-FORT GORDON CHAPTER - 08/02/2016
Vidyo, Inc. donated a 32 inch monitor to the chapter at AFCEA's TechNet Augusta in August. Attending the event are (l to r) Robert (Bob) Largent, Vidyo; Chapter President Brian Coffey, CACI; and Phil Curtis Vidyo. The 2016 TechNet Augusta event in August prompted one of it's largest attendance. Chapter volunteers served many hours to help coordinate the event which provides a forum for key military professionals from the U.S. Defense Department, armed services and U.S. Coast Guard to discuss issues and share ideas.

Aaron Dellamano, senior penetration tester of TECHGUARD Security, gave a brief overview of continuous network monitoring that included current state assessments; network security architecture; network monitoring; end point security architecture; and automation at the chapter's Lunch and Learn in March.

In January, the chapter held a breakfast/awards ceremony to present the 2015 science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) grants to seven local teachers. Grant recipients are Vanessa Stone, Milbrook Elementary; Esther Blake, Chukker Creek Elementary; Julie Newman, Riverside Elementary; Amy Edwards, Mossy Creek Elementary; Robin Rogers, Jefferson Elementary; Charlotte Smith, Lakeside High School; and Debbie Murphy, River Ridge Elementary. Horace Carney, chapter scholarship chair, and Bob Damen, chapter president, helped to present the awards. These grants will be used to purchase supplies, from basic electricity kits to a Thermocycler for DNA testing. The chapter congratulations all its winners.

AUGUSTA-FORT GORDON CHAPTER - 01/21/2012
Nine teachers from the Augusta-Fort Gordon area receive 2011 Science Teaching Tool awards from chapter officers and sponsors in January. The chapter presented Science Teaching Tool awards totaling $6,000 to nine science teachers from the Augusta-Fort Gordon area in January. Horace Carney, chapter vice president for education, organized the application and selection process and hosted the teachers for a breakfast honoring them at the Augusta Canal Interpretive Center. Bob Damen, chapter president, presented the awards and certificates to each teacher. It was an exciting and collaborative event as each teacher described their projects and shared many ideas with each other.

Buchholz Memorial Scholarship to Senior Master Sgt. Larry Hartman, USAF, during the chapter's annual award ceremony in January. The annual scholarship is made possible by an endowment from General Dynamics to AFCEA International. Muriel Buchholz, wife of the late Lt. Gen. Douglas Buchholz, USA (Ret.), joined in the presentation. Maj. Gen. Alan R. Lynn, USA, commanding general, Signal Center of Excellence, served as the speaker at the award ceremony.

AUGUSTA-FORT GORDON CHAPTER - 07/15/2011
In July, the chapter presents Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics scholarships during Member Appreciate Night at the August GreenJackets baseball game. In July, the chapter awarded $10,000 in academically based scholarships to assist students from the Augusta-Fort Gordon regional area who are pursuing a four-year college education in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The chapter presented the scholarship awards during an AFCEA Member Appreciation Night held at the Augusta GreenJackets baseball game. Nearly 70 AFCEA members and their families attended the event and observed the award ceremony organized by Horace Carney, chapter vice president of education and scholarships, and Chuck Kelleher, chapter vice president of membership. The competitive scholarships were awarded to four college students pursuing STEM degrees and five high school students accepted to college to pursue a STEM degree. AUGUSTA-FORT GORDON CHAPTER - 12/08/2010
In December, Bob Damen (c), chapter president, presents a check for $1,586 to James Greene (r), director, Fort Gordon Morale Welfare and Recreation Activity, along with Col. Ron Stephens, USA, chief of staff, U.S. Army Signal Center. The chapter held its annual CG Golf Scramble for the Fort Gordon Christmas House in conjunction with the U.S. Army Signal Center's Signal Conference held the first week of December. The chapter collected $1,586 to donate to the Christmas House, which provides meals, clothing and gifts to those military families unable to provide a traditional holiday for themselves.

In December, Col. Joe Yavorsky, USA (Ret.) (2nd from l), chapter president, presents Jim Greene (c), director of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation for Fort Gordon, and Col. Glenn Kennedy II, USA (2nd from r), garrison commander, with a $4,000 check for the Fort Gordon Christmas House as Sgt. Maj. Steve Caffee, USA (Ret.) (l), chapter member, and Sarah Crow from the Augusta Chapter of the Association of the United States Army, look on. In December, the chapter hosted its second annual Fort Gordon Christmas House golf tournament along with local chapters of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) and the Signal Corps Regimental Association (SCRA). The event was held in conjunction with the Signal Leadership Conference. Proceeds from the event totaled $4,000 and benefited the Christmas House, which provides toys and meals to needy enlisted families for the holidays. Col. AUGUSTA-FORT GORDON CHAPTER - 09/21/2009
The chapter held its inaugural Industry Days from September 21-23 at the Marriott Hotel on the Savannah River. A golf tournament on Monday was followed by panels on Tuesday. The first panel featured U.S. Army Signal Center project officers, who discussed homeland defense/civil support, network operations and Brigade Combat Team reorganization. Luncheon speaker Chief Sgt. Jeffrey Sorenson, USA, Army Chief Information Officer/G-6, began Wednesday's overview of the Global Network Enterprise Construct (GNEC), followed by experts reviewing lessons learned from a recent exercise testing the GNEC.

AUGUSTA-FORT GORDON CHAPTER - 01/24/2009
In January, the chapter, along with the National Science Center's Fort Discovery, awarded Science Teaching Tools awards to 12 area teachers. The grants totaled $5,000. In January, the chapter collaborated with the National Science Center's Fort Discovery to award $5,000 in Science Teaching Tools awards to 12 teachers from Aiken, Columbia, Richmond and Jefferson counties. The grants allow science teachers to buy equipment for the classrooms. Purchases included microscopes, propane burners and a hazardous waste spill science kit. The awards were presented to Ella Rucker Baker, Sand Hills (Georgia Network of Educational and Therapeutic Services); Jim Coleman, Coleman Academy Home School; Ellen Cotton, Jefferson Elementary School; Margaret Fussell, Aiken Middle School; Debi Gibson and Carol Stewart, Tobacco Road Elementary; Kristina Istre and Donita Legoas, Diamond Lakes Elementary; Beverly Lord, Glenn Hills Elementary School; Stacey Meade, Aiken Elementary School; Dr. Marsha Moorman, Lucy Laney High School; and Janell Smith, Martinez Elementary School.

At the April membership luncheon meeting, Staff Sgt. Cedric Maybank, USA, recounts his recent operational experiences in theater. In April, the chapter hosted the quarterly general membership meeting for the local chapters of AFCEA, the Association of the United States Army and the Signal Corps Regimental Association. The highlight was a presentation from soldiers of the 35th Signal Brigade, led by Col. John Baker, USA, brigade commander, who had recently returned from deployment in theater. VIPs in attendance were Brig. Gen. Jeff Foley, USA, commanding general, Fort Gordon, and Maj. Gen. Dennis Moran, USA (Ret.), Harris Corporation. The speakers included Lt. Col. AUGUSTA-FORT GORDON CHAPTER - 08/09/2007
Staff Sgt. James Kundert, USAF, receives the $1,500 Jerry Lapp Memorial Scholarship from Joe Yavorsky, chapter president, in August. In August the chapter presented $7,000 in AnySchool Scholarships during an event at the Gordon Club. Staff Sgt. James Kundert, USAF, 338th Training Squadron, Fort Gordon, received the Jerry Lapp Memorial Scholarship of $1,500, endowed by Engineering Solutions and Products, Incorporated (ESP). Kundert is an electronics major at Southern Illinois University. Ten more college students majoring in sciences received scholarships of $750 or $500. Corporate sponsors of the AFCEA Educational Fund are Harris Corp., Janus Research Group, Inc., ESP, and Rockwell-Collins. The chapter also held their 2nd annual scholarship golf tournament at Fort Gordon on August 24.

AUGUSTA-FORT GORDON CHAPTER - 05/03/2007
The Augusta Technical College subchapter student board members participated in the college open house in May. Aninicer Whitfield, subchapter president, and Jerry Hendricks, subchapter vice president, each set up a membership table at the Augusta Technical College's Augusta and Waynesboro locations. They spoke to potential students about the benefits of joining the AFCEA subchapter and handed out information on the subchapter's current projects and upcoming events. The subchapter board members are mentored by chapter members and faculty advisors Rebecca Byrd and Arthur Brengettsy.
