GREATER MONMOUTH CHAPTER - 12/07/2024

Photo by Russ Meseroll In December 2024, the chapter co-hosted the Association of the United States Army Monmouth Chapter's annual Gingerbread Ball in Long Branch, New Jersey. The event brought together 175 guests for an evening of fine dining, live music by the Jazz Lobsters, chance auction and a gingerbread house baking competition.

As part of the chapter's commitment to supporting the community, the AFCEA Greater Monmouth Chapter donated $7,500 to the Fisher House Foundation. All proceeds from the evening, including AFCEA's generous contribution, will benefit this vital organization.

GREATER MONMOUTH CHAPTER - 02/07/2025
Members of the C5ISR Center, Naval Air Warfare Center, U.S. Air Force and AFCEA International, who served as judges for the New Jersey Southern Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, pose for a photo during the February event. The New Jersey Southern Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (NJSJSHS) meets every year to compete for scholarships and other awards by presenting to a panel of judges. Gayle Grant, chapter board member, is a longtime volunteer and supporter of this event. She is an advocate of the symposium and assisted in securing the chapter's scholarship award for an event that encourages research in STEM.

Rising high school students from across New Jersey converged for the eighth annual NJSJSHS in February. The chapter provided $1,700 in awards for paper and poster presentations. The NJSJSHS is open to high school students conducting research in STEM. The students compete for scholarships and other awards by presenting their results to a panel of judges and their peers. GREATER MONMOUTH CHAPTER - 06/18/2024
The 10 roundtables hosted by current and future Transformation Twenty-One Total Technology-Next Generation (T4NG) prime contractors meet during the June mixer. The chapter hosted a successful networking event as a teaser to the Advance Planning Brief to Industry (APBI) conference in June at Ocean Place Resort in Long Branch, New Jersey. The event featured a unique "speed dating" setup, where large and small companies hosted tables to showcase their offerings. Cognosante, part of Accenture Federal Services, GovCIO, CGI Federal, Deloitte, T4 Design, RP Professional, Canopy Health, Zetta, GDIT and Booz Allen were the hosting tables at the mixer. Guests had the opportunity to learn about these companies and engage in meaningful discussions. The event provided a valuable platform for networking and information exchange.

The chapter lined up industry leaders to include keynote speaker, Dr. David Rhew, global chief medical officer at Microsoft; John Larson, executive vice president, artificial intelligence (AI) practice lead at Booz Allen; and Dr. Mike Uohara, chief medical informatics officer at Booz Allen Hamilton. A panel discussion was held with all speakers and SAIC's director of data science, Shweta Mulcare, discussing the impact of artificial intelligence in the health care spectrum.

The conversations highlighted exploration of high impact/low risk use cases aimed at improving outcomes and processes without risking patient safety, how to operationalize responsible AI principles within your organization and the health care industry, as well as best practices to build AI systems that rapidly transition from lab to production and accelerate time to impact using real-world case studies.

GREATER MONMOUTH CHAPTER - 10/21/2024
Jeffrey Neill discusses the Technology Acquisition Center's missions and strategic initiatives for FY 2025 at the October luncheon. In October, the chapter hosted the VA IT Acquisition Engagement Lunch & Learn at the Oyster Point Hotel in Red Bank, New Jersey. The event focused on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' Technology Acquisition Center (TAC) and Office of Strategic Sourcing (OSS) Industry Engagement Strategies and IT Acquisition forecasting. The featured speaker was Jeffrey Neill, associate executive director of the TAC. Neill discussed the TAC's missions and strategic initiatives for FY 25. He outlined his objectives to improve communication strategy, TAC procurement services, TAC workload management and collaboration with all partners.

Neill was followed Luwanda Jones, deputy chief information officer of the OSS. Jones presented and discussed the OSS missions and goals and she also highlighted many of their accomplishments, including 46.67% service-disabled veteran-owned small business acquisitions in FY 24. Chapter members and board gather for the June event. The chapter held a successful Post Veterans Affairs Advanced Planning Briefing for Industry networking event at Tavern 19 in Eatontown, New Jersey. It was a great turnout. Many old connections were refreshed and new connections were formed.

The 2018 Gingerbread Ball was held in December at the Ocean Place Resort and Spa in Long Branch, New Jersey. The chapter co-hosted again this year along with the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Monmouth Chapter, the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Army Aviation Association of America (AAAA), the Garden State Chapter of the Association of Old Crows (AOC), and the New Jersey Bakers Board of Trade (NJBBT). This event attracted 170 attendees and netted in excess of $60,000 to be donated to the Fisher House Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. The chapter and AFCEA corporate also sponsored the Gingerbread Village with a $1,000 donation.

The chapter and the Veterans Affairs Technology Acquisition Center join forces in May to co-sponsor the VA2K Walk for Homeless Veterans. The chapter and the Veterans Affairs Technology Acquisition Center (VA TAC) joined forces in May to co-sponsor the VA2K Walk for Homeless Veterans. The event, held at Wolcott Park in Eatontown, New Jersey, aimed to encourage employees at all levels of fitness to join in a fun, short walk while benefiting homeless veterans. Sixty-five participants organized at 11:30 a.m. to register and drop off donations. The TAC's associate executive director gave a brief speech to welcome and thank all the participants. A group photo was taken and then everyone proceeded to walk the 2K course. To date, the chapter has collected 261 articles of clothing in support of veterans for a total of approximately $2,500.

The chapter's team joins forces with a team from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to support returning warfighters through a fundraising walk event in May. In honor of National Employee Wellness Day in May, the chapter proudly co-sponsored the Technology Acquisition Center's (TAC's) 1st Annual VA 2K Walk and Roll event with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). More than 115 attendees participated in the walk on the boardwalk in Long Branch, New Jersey. The event encouraged employees at all levels of fitness to join in the fun, short walk while benefiting homeless veterans. Clothing donations and monetary contributions from AFCEA members and TAC and Office of Information and Technology employees and family members amounted to $5,812. Wendy McCutcheon, executive director, Office of Acquisition and Logistics, TAC, VA, and her team led by Carol Phelan, business resource manager, Office of Acquisition Operations, TAC, VA, have established a mission in Monmouth County that is dedicated to serving veterans. The chapter proudly supports the VA in this mission.

In November, the chapter heard a detailed presentation from the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority (FMERA), the entity created under law to implement the Reuse and Redevelopment Plan for economic development, growth and planning with a focus on technology-based industries, for the 1,126 acres of real estate at Fort Monmouth following the base closure in September 2011.

The chapter's Young AFCEANs participate in the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Run in November. In November, as part of the Young AFCEAN Adventure Series Mentorship Program, the chapter's Young AFCEANs participated in the fourth annual Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Run. Lt. Zilinski, USA, was killed in action in Bayji, Iraq, on November 19, 2005. The Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Fund was created and founded by a group of very close friends of the lieutenant to honor his memory and spirit for life.

Skip Deitz (l), chapter first vice president, presents a token of thanks to Command Sgt. Maj. Tyrone Johnson, USA, who served as the keynote speaker in June. The chapter cosponsored the June luncheon with the SCRA. Command Sgt. Maj. Tyrone Johnson, USA, CECOM Life Cycle Management Command, served as the distinguished speaker. He noted that this year is both the 149th birthday of the Signal Corps and the Year of the Noncommissioned Officer (NCO). The major recounted Fort Monmouth's history and the contributions CECOM has made to the Signal Corps and the Army during its 92 years. He also paid tribute to the number of NCOs who have served in combat operations from the Vietnam War to operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. New officers for the 2009-2010 year also were elected.

In May, the chapter co-sponsored the 5th Annual Support Our Heroes Military Ball along with the Army Aviation Association of America, the Association of Old Crows and the Association of the United States Army. The 82nd Airborne Division Chorus from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, provided the entertainment. Through the ball and additional year-long programs and fundraisers, the chapter has raised $210,000 for the Fisher House Foundation.

Chuck Strimpler (r), chapter president, thanks Russell Langan, deputy project manager, Warfighter Information Network-Tactical (WIN-T), for serving as the guest speaker in March. Russell Langan, deputy project manager, Warfighter Information Network-Tactical (WIN-T), served as the distinguished speaker at the chapter's March luncheon. He provided an overview of the WIN-T programs and the project management structure, which consists of a staff of more than 700 government and contract personnel and has a budget of more than $3 billion. Langan also shared the Base Realignment and Closure strategy and transitional plans that are being developed in preparation for the transition to Aberdeen Proving Ground. He noted that approximately 60 percent of the staff will have to be replaced, and he encouraged industry partners to engage and provide support in order to protect the mission and ensure continuity of the programs.

Thierry Belloeil, Acquisition Corps, French foreign liaison officer at Fort Monmouth, with a token of appreciation for serving as the March featured speaker. For the February meeting, the chapter invited Col. Thierry Belloeil, Acquisition Corps, French foreign liaison officer at Fort Monmouth, to serve as the guest speaker. The colonel described the DGA, or the French defense procurement system, outlining the organizations within the DGA and its relationship with the French Armed Forces. Col. Belloeil explained the systems development and acquisition process that the French Ministry of Defense follows in addition to its contract processes. He concluded with an overview of the joint efforts among France, the European Union and the U.S. Army.

Chuck Strimpler (r), chapter president, thanks Joseph Forino, product director for network operations at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, for serving as guest speaker at the luncheon in January. Joseph Forino, product director for network operations at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, served as the featured speaker at the chapter's January meeting. Forino explained that the goal of network operations is to use information technology to give warfighters an advantage on the battlefield. Network operations also provide data products in the form of collections of mission data that are required to initialize battle command and other Army command, control, computers, communications, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR) systems. This data includes the information required to enable end-to-end network centric connectivity and interoperability across the tactical Internet. Fornio shared that every unit with C4ISR equipment requires a network operations data load and training provided by network operations personnel. He also discussed future challenges, issues due to base realignment and closure, and future program opportunities.

In December, Capt. Ronald Iammartino, USA (3rd from r), commander, Headquarters Command, accepts a check for $6,000 on behalf of the Holiday Helper Program. Maj. Gen. Dennis L. Via, USA (c), commander, U.S. Communications and Electronics Command Life Cycle Management Command, and members of the Combined Professional Association presented the check to Capt. Iammartino. In December, Maj. Gen. Dennis L. Via, USA, commander, U.S. Army Communications and Electronics Command (CECOM) Life Cycle Management Command (LCMC), provided an overview on the current state of CECOM. Gen. Via focused on CECOM LCMC's accomplishments and how they have contributed to the success and safety of the warfighter. He also discussed the ongoing changes and events at Fort Monmouth as the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) deadline of September 2011 approaches. The general highlighted the new state-of-the-art facilities that are being constructed at Aberdeen Proving Ground and emphasized the benefits of the move.

Scot MacKenzie, USA, director for strategic planning, U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) Life Cycle Management Command, in appreciation for his discussion at the November meeting. The chapter's November meeting featured guest speaker Col. Scot MacKenzie, USA, director for strategic planning, U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) Life Cycle Management Command (LCMC). Col. MacKenzie's presentation concentrated on the critical issues and trends the Army will deal with at the strategic level for the next 10-15 years. These issues include current or future states/countries that are struggling in Southwest Asia, such as Afghanistan, and also on the African continent; consequences of economic globalization, religious extremism and the asymmetric threat; population growth and youth concentration in certain countries; proliferation of weapons of mass destruction; and energy and global warming. Each of these areas, the colonel says, will have a direct impact on the United States and its allies, as well as on the U.S. Army's response to events in support of national policy.

Col. Cris Boyd, USA, project manager, command posts, outlines the challenges of new fielding concepts during the October luncheon. The chapter's guest speaker for the October luncheon was Col. Cris Boyd, USA, project manager, command posts. Col. Boyd discussed the Army's unit set fielding (USF) process and its importance to operational readiness. The USF process has five phases, including planning and reset, and plays a critical role in the fielding of brigade combat teams. Under this new fielding concept, the Army faces such challenges as the introduction of the system of systems and network-centric operations combined with increased personnel turnover and increased operational tempo.

In October the chapter's guest speaker was Gary Blohm, deputy project manager, network and complementary programs, Future Combat Systems (FCS) (Brigade Combat Team), who discussed his work with FCS. Blohm stated that FCS is a highly integrated structure of manned and unmanned, air and ground assets, bound by a distributed network. He said that FCS is a centerpiece of transformation strategy to revolutionize how the force modernizes, transforms and enhances soldier and force capabilities. FCS fields revolutionary brigade combat teams while inserting targeted spinouts to the current force, providing a suite of full-spectrum capabilities to meet emerging security challenges. Blohm noted that FCS is the Army's principal modernization strategy designed for full-spectrum operations, adding that the joint networked system is adaptable to various types of warfare and terrain and enables levels of joint connectivity, situational awareness, understanding and synchronized operations for the so ... GREATER MONMOUTH CHAPTER - 06/27/2006
At the June awards, Dr. Walter McAfee Scholarship recipients appear with chapter presenters and officers of the Zeta Epsilon Lambda chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, which helps with the scholarship selections. AFCEA Fort Monmouth is committed to promoting AFCEA's science and engineering fields. At the annual education dinner award recipients were acknowledged and over $97,000 including $7,500 to AFCEA International was presented. The awards included 15 scholarships to local area students, 19 scientific grants to area high schools and five Science Teaching Tools Awards to middle schools in addition to grants given to the Boy Scouts of America and the InfoAge Science-History Learning Center, Wall, New Jersey, a new learning center for grade school students.
    The chapter also presented 12 science fair awards in conjunction with Brookdale Community College, Lincroft, New Jersey, as well as eight Young AFCEAN grants recognizing the best essays explaining which nation is the United States' largest threat and how to counteract that threat. All of the awards were given to help promote science and encourage students to become scientists and engineers.
